Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dave Kaplan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex Shea (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kaplan comes to the cage accompanied by Tenderness by General Public. Alex Shea will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alex Shea! The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Bruno Lombardi and Chad Campbell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Shea tries to clinch up. Kaplan avoids a punch combination nicely.
Shea throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Shea is looking to clinch. Shea throws a head kick that misses. A good leg kick by Shea. Shea tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kaplan swats him away and circles back towards the center. Shea displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kaplan. Shea misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Kaplan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shea's waist but Shea gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kaplan off to one side. Shea moves in looking to clinch but Kaplan pushes him off. Kaplan tries to score a power double leg takedown but Shea sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kaplan somewhat. A clash of legs there as Kaplan blocks the low kick. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kaplan closes this distance looking for a takedown but Shea circles away. Shea tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kaplan swats him away and circles back towards the center. Kaplan shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Shea but Shea pushes him off and we're back to square one. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dave Kaplan. That's going to take a lot out of him. Shea moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Shea fails with an attempt to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Shea tries to land a knee to the head but Kaplan blocks with his arms.
Kaplan gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Kaplan passes Shea's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Kaplan throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Kaplan winds up and cracks Shea with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Shea is refusing to be controlled, as Kaplan sits in half guard. Kaplan sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Shea defending well though. Kaplan looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Shea with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Kaplan tightens his grip and picks Shea up, before dumping him to the ground. Shea manages to land in guard. Kaplan in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Kaplan lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Kaplan postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kaplan throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Shea works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Kaplan pushes down on Shea's leg and manages to get into half guard. Kaplan not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Kaplan wants to free his trapped foot but Shea is holding on for dear life with his legs. Kaplan throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Kaplan missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Kaplan sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Shea defending well though. Kaplan is nestled in close to Shea, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Shea is refusing to be controlled, as Kaplan sits in half guard. Shea keeps control of the position for the meantime.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. The fight stays on the outside here - Shea looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Kaplan shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Kaplan showed some decent athleticism there.

If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Kaplan sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Shea defending well though. Kaplan throwing shots but Shea is blocking nicely. Kaplan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Shea keeps working. Kaplan thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Kaplan missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
