PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jason Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charles Latter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Latter has chosen A New Divide by Linkin Park as his entrance music. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jason Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charles Latter! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Wesley Smith and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Latter bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Smith dodges the ground and pound from Latter. Latter advances nicely into full mount. Latter wants to control the pace but Smith is squirming around nicely. Latter unloads with some shots from mount but Smith bucks and avoids them well.
Latter postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Smith looks a forlorn figure.
Latter has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Latter controlling from mount. Let's hope that Latter has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Latter is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Smith has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Smith tries to buck Latter off but he can't manage it. Latter is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Smith is surviving well by controlling Latter's body position as best he can. Smith is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Latter looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.

Latter pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Latter controlling the position easily from mount. Latter avoids the attempt from Smith to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Latter putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound! Smith takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Latter cracks Smith with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Smith is bucking up trying to escape but Latter cracks him with another couple of good strikes. Latter lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Smith hang on? Latter sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Smith taking shots to the head. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith is breathing heavily. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Latter with shots to the head and body - Smith looks very uncomfortable down there. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Charles Latter dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Latter moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Smith is looking to clinch but Latter is avoiding it.
A big right from Smith misses. Latter misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Latter fails with a takedown attempt. Latter tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Smith swivels and escapes. Jason Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Smith tries to clinch up but Latter circles away and keeps his distance. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Latter will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Smith uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Latter.
Smith fails in his attempt to clinch. Smith is looking to take this fight into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Smith tries to close the distance and clinch but Latter swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Smith lands a nice hook to Latter's body. Latter takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Latter looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Smith is fending him off so far but Latter persists. Nope, Smith circles away and we're back to standing. Jason Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Charles Latter. Latter avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Latter keeps the fight on the outside. Latter is breathing heavily. Latter fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Smith avoids it really well and circles away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith is looking to clinch but Latter is avoiding it.
Latter changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smith tries to avoid it but Latter manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smith to the ground. Smith escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Smith keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Smith tries to clinch up but Latter circles away and keeps his distance. Smith circles away from the clinch attempt.
The fight stays on the outside here - Smith looks like he's thinking about clinching though. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smith is defended easily by Latter. Latter closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Smith avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Latter. Smith is trying to stand back up but Latter is controlling him
That's two minutes gone in the round. Latter looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Smith is trying to stand.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Latter connects with a nice short shot to Smith's temple. Smith is trying to stand back up but Latter is controlling him
Latter winds up and cracks Smith with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Latter sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Smith defending well though. Latter takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Latter thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Latter is nestled in close to Smith, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Latter lands a nice short elbow. Latter moves into side control, avoiding the strikes from Smith.
You can see the frustration on Smith's face as Latter controls the position. Charles Latter has got the better of the ground game so far. Latter trying to control the position but Smith is working away. Smith is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Latter is controlling him well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Latter scores with a couple of short elbows. Latter has knee on belly and moves into mount. Latter looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Latter landing punches. Latter lands a nice shot to the head. A nice elbow there by Latter. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Charles Latter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Latter has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Charles Latter is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Latter scoring with strikes but Smith is staying in there. Jason Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Latter pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
And that's the end of the fight! Charles Latter comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I've got Latter winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
