PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rucka Ali (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rashad Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rucka Ali!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rashad Evans!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Evans changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Ali looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Ali wants to control but Evans postures up.
You can see the frustration on Ali's face as Evans controls the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Evans scoring with punches and elbows.
Ali is looking for a sweep.
Ali can't do much from the bottom here.

Evans stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Evans throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Evans avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Ali fails with the takedown

and Evans counters with a single leg into guard. Ali didn't expect that.

Evans wants to stand but Ali is controlling his posture from full guard.

Ali had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Evans is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Ali Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Evans's back instead.
Evans needs to remain patient if he's going to get out of this sticky situation.
Ali wants to control but Evans is keeping busy.
Evans turns into Ali and is now in his guard.
Ali seems keen to control Evans's posture.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Evans is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Evans won't allow Ali to sweep him here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ali can't keep his opponent in guard - Evans advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Ali is breathing heavily.
Evans wants to free his trapped foot but Ali is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Evans is figuring out what he wants to do next.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Evans wants to stand but Ali has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
Still in half guard, Evans seems content to control.
Ali wants to get back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Evans is controlling the pace.
Evans prevents Ali from improving his position.

Evans is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Ali is in trouble now - Evans has advanced to mount!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Ali takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

Evans has control of an arm but Ali manages to advance to Evans's back!
Ali tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Evans takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Ali takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Ali is trying to escape the mount.

Evans is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!

Evans moves into the clinch.

Evans is trying to trip Ali. He has hold of a leg but Ali is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Evans persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Evans is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Evans must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Evans gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

and Evans counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Ali!

Evans is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Ali shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Evans counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Evans cracks Ali with a solid left hand.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ali wants to stand and escape but Evans is having none of it.
Rashad Evans has got the better of the ground game so far.
Evans slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rashad Evans showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Ali's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Evans closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Evans's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

and Evans counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Evans.
Evans lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Ali backwards.
Ali jumps guard but Evans stands there with Ali around his waist. Ali gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
The is referee keeping an eye on Evans - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
A nice left hand lands by Ali.

Evans gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Evans is looking for a kimura but Ali is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Evans to get the leverage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Ali tries to kick Evans off but Evans keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ali is trying to maintain the position but Evans is very close to passing his half guard.
Ali is trying to stand back up but Evans is controlling him
Ali is trying to get back to full guard.
Evans takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Evans is nestled in close to Ali, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Evans wants to pass the guard but Ali is defending well.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Evans feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Ali is trying to keep Evans in close.
Ali striking off his back but it's not causing Evans any problems.

Ali tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Evans has managed to clinch.

Evans works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Ali looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Evans wants to control from the top but Ali keeps moving.
Evans has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Evans stops Ali from standing up.

Ali will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Evans wants to control from the top but Ali keeps moving.
Rucka Ali has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rashad Evans is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Ali misses with a body punch

and Evans counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rashad Evans comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Evans has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
