PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kam Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson comes to the cage accompanied by Fort Minor - Remember the Name. Penn has chosen Pantera - I'm Broken as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kam Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jay Penn!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn fails to land with a series of punches.
Penn lands a jab to the nose.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johnson sprawls well. Johnson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Penn gets slowly back to his feet.
Jay Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Penn darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Johnson moves into full guard.

Johnson is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Penn is aware though and is defending well.

Penn postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Johnson is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Penn, into his guard.
Johnson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Penn is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Johnson drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Penn manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Johnson has Penn in his guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Penn trying to control the action but Johnson is working from the bottom.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Penn wants to work for an arm triangle but Johnson is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Johnson is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily.
Penn is keen to just control but Johnson is a slippery customer.

Johnson wants to control but Penn is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Johnson is staying active underneath Penn, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Johnson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Johnson lands in his opponent's guard.

That was a close round but I would say that Kam Johnson will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Penn shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Johnson's guard.

Johnson isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Penn stacks Johnson on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Penn!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Johnson has his foot on Penn's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Penn works his way back into a safe position though.

Penn with a flurry of punches that miss.
Penn throws a strike but Johnson rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Penn throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Johnson escapes and throws Penn's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Penn wants to control but Johnson postures up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Johnson advances to full mount.
Kam Johnson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Penn is wriggling around trying to escape.
Johnson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Penn throws a strike from the bottom but Johnson uses the opportunity to take his back.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Johnson looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Penn is fending him off so far but Johnson persists. Nope, Penn circles away and we're back to standing.

Johnson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Penn napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Johnson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Johnson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Johnson works to advance to full mount. Penn defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Johnson looking to control but Penn is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Johnson blocks Penn's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Penn tries to lock up and control but Johnson gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Penn is desperately trying to improve his position but Johnson has a good base and remains in mount.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Penn is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Johnson wants to take his opponent's back but Penn doesn't allow it.

Johnson is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Penn can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Penn slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Penn is looking for a sweep. Johnson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Johnson is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Penn wants to improve his position but Johnson is controlling well.

Johnson seems to be working for a kimura but Penn defends the submission attempt.
Johnson wants to take a breather but Penn is having none of it.
Penn tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.
Penn is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Johnson is looking for a kimura but Penn is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Johnson to get the leverage.
Kam Johnson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Kam Johnson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Johnson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
