PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between CJ Penncil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anatoli Volinov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Volinov has chosen Soviet March as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, CJ Penncil!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Anatoli Volinov!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penncil moves in looking to clinch but Volinov pushes him off.
Volinov scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Penncil avoids a punch combination nicely.
Penncil tries to close the distance and clinch but Volinov swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Volinov.
Volinov shoots in but no luck this time.
Volinov closes the distance looking to clinch

and Penncil counters with a shoot takedown. Volinov fights it but they end up in guard.
Penncil stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Volinov swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Volinov throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Volinov is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penncil is looking to escape.
Penncil tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Volinov throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Volinov wants to take a breather but Penncil is having none of it.
Volinov is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Penncil works his way to full guard. Good work.
Penncil seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Penncil can't keep his opponent in guard - Volinov advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Penncil is concentrating on defense, preventing Volinov from advancing position.
Volinov thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Penncil's head.
Penncil trying to hold on to Volinov's head to control him but Volinov postures up.

Penncil is looking for a sweep. Volinov is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Volinov stalling away here and it's allowed Penncil to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Volinov wants to control from the top but Penncil keeps moving.

Penncil throws his legs up looking for a submission but Volinov uses it to pass to side control.
Penncil is breathing heavily.
Penncil tries to improve position but can't.
Penncil struggling a bit here.
Penncil prevents Volinov from improving position.
Volinov trying to control the action but Penncil is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Volinov tries to move to mount but Penncil blocks the move with his legs.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Penncil has Volinov up against the cage in a clinch.
Volinov tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Penncil tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Volinov pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Penncil falls off balance throwing a combination

and Volinov counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Penncil's guard now.
Volinov thows a big elbow that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Anatoli Volinov will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Volinov gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Volinov has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Penncil off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Volinov doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Penncil counters by clinching up.

Volinov has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Penncil uses from the top position.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Volinov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Volinov is on top in guard.
Penncil is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Volinov looking to sit in guard and control but Penncil gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Penncil is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Volinov wants to get back to his feet but Penncil is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Penncil looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Penncil gets to his feet - Volinov follows without any prompting.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Penncil changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Volinov looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penncil throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Penncil wants to control but Volinov is keeping him busy.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

and Penncil counters with a shoot takedown. Volinov fights it but they end up in guard.
Volinov not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

CJ Penncil dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Volinov stalks Penncil and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Penncil's face. Penncil staggers backwards, shaken.

Volinov wants to clinch

and Penncil decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Volinov's guard.
Volinov wants to get back to his feet but Penncil is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Penncil controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Volinov trying to keep a closed guard but Penncil is proving a slippery customer.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penncil trying to control the position from guard on top but Volinov is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penncil wants to get up but he can't break Volinov's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Penncil drops back, looking for a kneebar! Volinov looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Volinov looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Volinov!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Volinov lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Penncil seems a little lost for a moment, as Volinov dominates the positioning.
Penncil is trying to improve his position.
Volinov tries to move to mount but Penncil blocks the move with his legs.

Volinov stands up.
Volinov shoots in and drives through. Penncil sprawls well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penncil shoots for a takedown but Volinov saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Volinov clinches.

Volinov decides to pull guard.

Volinov had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Penncil is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Volinov Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Penncil's back instead.

Volinov is persistently looking for the submission but Penncil is defending it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Penncil tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

And that's the end of the fight!
Anatoli Volinov comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Volinov has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
