Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Gilliam Howard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryal Squires (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Howard comes to the cage accompanied by The Terminator. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gilliam Howard!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ryal Squires!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Squires closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Squires circles away from the clinch attempt.
Squires avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Squires moves out of range of the body kick from Howard.
Squires slips a jab and a cross from Howard.
Howard tries to clinch but Squires is having none of it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Howard looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Howard tries to clinch up but Squires circles away and keeps his distance.

Squires has taken the fight to the clinch.
Squires blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
A right hook to the body lands for Howard.

Squires escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

and Squires counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.

and Squires counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Squires is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Squires tries to pass the half guard into mount. Howard knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Howard wants to improve his position but Squires is controlling well.
Squires is looking to take a break and control but Howard is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Howard is looking for a sweep. Squires is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Howard is doing well to control the position and prevent Squires from advancing to side control.
Squires throwing shots but Howard is blocking nicely.
Howard trying to hold on to Squires's head to control him but Squires postures up.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

so Squires counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Squires chips away with some ground and pound.
Howard is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Howard tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Squires throwing strikes but missing.
Squires working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Squires stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Howard swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Squires trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Howard manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Squires manages to get himself to full guard.
Squires lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Howard!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Howard is trying to escape the mount.
Howard is breathing heavily.
Poor strikes thrown by Squires there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Howard wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Squires.

Howard wants to control but Squires is having none of it.
Howard is working to get back to half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Squires landing strikes, looking to finish!
Squires thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Squires has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Squires takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Squires misses with a head shot.

Howard is in a horrible position here. Squires smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Howard is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Squires throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Howard because Squires loaded up on that one.
Squires throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Howard wants to control but Squires is having none of it.
Squires sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Howard keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Howard in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Squires lands a nice shot to the head.
Squires throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Howard can't escape the position.

Squires working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Howard looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Squires! Submission of the night perhaps?

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Ryal Squires! Ryal Squires retains his light heavyweight title!
