PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tyler Jakes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brendan Schaub (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyler Jakes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Brendan Schaub!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Stewart Dunkirk and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jakes doesn't manage to clinch there - Schaub circles away.
Schaub shoots in and drives through. Jakes sprawls well.
Brendan Schaub seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Schaub throws a body punch but Jakes moves out of range.
Schaub fails to land with a series of punches.
Jakes scores with a crisp jab that stopped Schaub in his tracks.


It looks like Brendan Schaub has been cut.

Schaub tries to keep at a distance but Jakes has taken the fight into the clinch.

Jakes turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Jakes manages to end up in side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Schaub prevents Jakes from improving position.
Schaub parries the strikes from Jakes easily there. Jakes is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Schaub to escape.

Jakes working the head and body with strikes.
Schaub is not content to let Jakes control the position.
Jakes prevents Schaub from escaping the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Jakes decides to stand up, so the ref orders Schaub to his feet.
Jakes is trying hard to land a takedown here. Schaub sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
A nice combination there by Schaub.


It looks like Tyler Jakes has been cut.
Schaub misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Schaub looks gassed!
Schaub throws a series of punches but Jakes avoids them all with ease.

Jakes shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Schaub manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Jakes sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Schaub's guard.

Jakes wants to lay and pray for a moment but Schaub keeps working.
Jakes works his foot free and advances to mount.
Jakes trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Jakes lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Schaub is squirming around, avoiding Jakes's attempts to control the action.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jakes lands with some strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Jakes doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Schaub counters with a left to the body.
Jakes wants to clinch up but Schaub keeps it at a distance.
Schaub shoots for a double leg takedown but Jakes sprawls well. He's pushed Schaub's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Schaub's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Schaub duly obliges.

Schaub closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Jakes moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Jakes controls Schaub momentarily but Schaub frees himself.

Schaub drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Jakes manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Schaub has Jakes in his guard.

Jakes gets to his feet. Schaub looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Jakes shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Jakes wants to control but Schaub is keeping him busy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jakes is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Schaub is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jakes connects with a nice short shot to Schaub's temple.

Jakes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Schaub is keeping the position for now.
Jakes trying to control the position from guard on top but Schaub is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jakes has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Tyler Jakes just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Jakes is looking to clinch.
Schaub throws a combination. Jakes tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Jakes uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Schaub.
Schaub swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Brendan Schaub will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! And we move into the final round!


Schaub keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Nice sprawl there from Schaub as Jakes shoots in.
Jakes fails in his attempt to clinch.
Schaub misses with the combination.
A slow jab from Schaub misses its intended target.
Schaub throws a right hand that Jakes ducks under and follows up with a left that Jakes also avoids with ease.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Jakes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyler Jakes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jakes shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Schaub pinned against the cage. Schaub gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jakes shoots for a takedown but Schaub saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Schaub lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Schaub lands a body shot.

Jakes tries to hold on but Schaub pushes him away.
Jakes is looking to improve his position but Schaub isn't that keen on the idea.

Schaub is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Jakes has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Jakes is in all sorts of trouble here.

Schaub working for a guillotine from mount but Jakes is in no mood to give up.
Jakes is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Jakes is working hard here to advance position.
Tyler Jakes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Schaub has hold of Jakes's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Jakes manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Schaub is going olschool here, as he tries to force Jakes to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Jakes shrugs it off.

Schaub moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Jakes has worked his arm free - good work by Jakes!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Schaub is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Jakes knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Schaub is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Jakes is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Jakes sneaks back into half guard.

Schaub is looking for a kimura here.
Jakes is trying to maintain the position but Schaub is very close to passing his half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Schaub seems to be looking for submissions.
Jakes trying to control from the bottom.
Jakes flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Jakes is looking to improve his position.

Schaub is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Schaub is trying to work for a kimura but Jakes is defending well.

Schaub is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Jakes still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Jakes has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Brendan Schaub comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Schaub has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
