PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Cesar Chavez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kingston Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mason has chosen SOS-Collie Buddz as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Cesar Chavez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kingston Mason!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Emerson Jorge and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Chavez closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mason to the mat! Mason manages to get full guard.
Chavez won't allow Mason to sweep him here.

Mason pushes Chavez off and gets back to his feet.
Chavez scores with a sloppy right hand. Mason should have avoided that one.

Mason fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Chavez sprawls well initially but Mason persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Mason not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Chavez is trying to get back to full guard.
Chavez is trying to control but can't.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Mason passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Chavez!
Mason landing strikes, looking to finish!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mason working for a guillotine from mount but Chavez is in no mood to give up.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Chavez is wriggling around trying to escape.
Mason lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Chavez hang on?
Chavez is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Mason goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Chavez is on top in guard.
Chavez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mason on the ground.
Chavez trying to stand up but can't free himself from Mason's guard.

Mason working for a triangle but Chavez defends it easily.
Mason looks gassed!
Mason wants to sweep but no luck.
Mason has a closed guard, preventing Chavez from standing up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chavez stands and throws Mason's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Mason tries to bench press Chavez off him but Chavez keeps the position.
Chavez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mason keeps working.

Chavez is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Mason knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Chavez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mason has escaped the position, nice work there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mason manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Chavez wants to pass the guard but Mason is defending well.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Nice jab there from Chavez.
Mason misses with a takedown
and Chavez counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Chavez scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Chavez throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Chavez is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Mason is looking to improve his position.

Chavez is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mason defends it well.
Chavez uses his free foot to push down on Mason's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mason.

Chavez wants to control the pace but Mason is squirming around nicely.

Chavez has control of Mason's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Mason regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Chavez is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Mason plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Chavez shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mason as he avoids it easily.
Mason falls off balance throwing a combination
and Chavez cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Chavez throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Chavez looks to land a combination. Mason sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Mason misses with a double jab
and Mason takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Chavez moves in looking to clinch but Mason pushes him off.
Nice sprawl there from Chavez as Mason shoots in.
Chavez works over Mason's head and body with a nice combination.
Mason circles away from the clinch attempt.
Mason takes a head kick and keeps coming.
A jab from Chavez finds it's way through Mason's defenses.

Chavez has managed to clinch.
Mason tries for a takedown. No joy.
Cesar Chavez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kingston Mason.
Mason throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Chavez blocks it with crossed arms.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mason goes for a takedown attempt but Chavez pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Chavez scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Mason throws a left and a right that both miss
and Chavez counters with a one-two to the body.
Chavez is working the combinations to good effect here.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for leaving it all in the cage!

Mason scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Chavez sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Mason is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Chavez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mason seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.


Chavez is rocked!
Mason wants to pass the guard but Chavez is defending well.

Mason is trying to work for a kimura but Chavez is defending well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mason has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Mason lands a big shot there that rocks Chavez but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Kingston Mason will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Chavez closes the distance and clinches up with Mason, looking for a takedown. Chavez pushes Mason against the cage but Mason circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Mason changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chavez tries to avoid it but Mason manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chavez to the ground. Chavez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Mason throws a head kick that misses
and Chavez counters with a right hand to the body.
Mason falls off balance throwing a combination
and Chavez counters with a three punch combo that has Mason backing up. Mason nods at Chavez to acknowledge the strikes.
Chavez stalks Mason and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Mason's face. Mason staggers backwards, shaken.
Mason has his takedown stuffed
and Chavez counters with a series of strikes. Mason will be more careful next time no doubt.
Chavez tries to clinch up.
Mason misses with the combination.

Chavez has closed the distance and engaged Mason in a clinch.
Mason misses with a knee to the head.
Mason looking for a takedown.
Cesar Chavez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kingston Mason.

Mason using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Chavez has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Mason turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Mason has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Chavez stands up out of Mason's guard for a moment - Mason manages to land a nice upkick.
Mason looking to hit a scissor sweep but Chavez is one step ahead there.

Chavez is looking to stand up but Mason won't let him.

Mason lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Chavez!

Oh Chavez is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!


It looks like Cesar Chavez has been cut.

Chavez is desperately trying to improve his position but Mason has a good base and remains in mount.
Oooh a big shot lands for Mason! Chavez is out! The ref dives in to save him from more punishment!
