Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Larry Laffer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Viktor Smolarek (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smolarek has chosen False Pretense as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Larry Laffer! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Viktor Smolarek! The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Igor Prikhodko and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Laffer dives in and grabs Smolarek's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smolarek pushes down on Laffer's head and hops out. Laffer looks for the body kick but Smolarek saw that one coming. Smolarek throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena. Laffer is breathing heavily. Smolarek slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Laffer takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Smolarek throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Smolarek misses with a two punch combination.
Laffer takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. Smolarek scores with a jab. Smolarek misses with a series of wild punches.
Smolarek lands a left and a right that send Laffer crashing to the mat, dazed. Smolarek thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
It looks like Larry Laffer has been cut. Smolarek sends Laffer crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Smolarek is motioning to the referee to let Laffer up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!
Laffer is rocked! Smolarek gets the takedown into side control. Smolarek wants to control but Laffer is keeping him busy. Laffer is trying to improve his position. Smolarek controlling the position. Smolarek stands up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Laffer has his takedown stuffed and Laffer takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Laffer slips under a jab. Laffer moves forwards but Smolarek connects with a nice, crisp jab. Smolarek lands with a straight right. Laffer didn't see that one coming. Laffer uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Smolarek. Smolarek shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smolarek accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Laffer wants to control but Smolarek passes easily into half guard.
Laffer is refusing to be controlled, as Smolarek sits in half guard. Laffer is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Smolarek's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Smolarek's back! Smolarek preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Laffer. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Smolarek controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smolarek is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Laffer gets his way!

Laffer is persistently looking for the submission but Smolarek is defending it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Smolarek trying to control the action but Laffer just sinks the hooks in. Laffer has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Smolarek is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Laffer gets his way!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smolarek trying to control the position but Laffer manages to sink in the hooks. Smolarek defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Laffer is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Smolarek has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Viktor Smolarek dominated that round. The cut man is working on Larry Laffer's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Laffer tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Smolarek counters with a lovely straight right hand! Smolarek throws and low kick but Laffer moves out of range easily. Smolarek scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Laffer looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Smolarek! Smolarek tries to hold on but Laffer pushes him away. Laffer is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Smolarek is surviving well by controlling Laffer's body position as best he can. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Laffer is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Smolarek has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Larry Laffer overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Laffer working for a submission but Smolarek is keeping him at bay. You get the feeling that Smolarek really doesn't like being in this position too much.
That's one minute gone in the round. Laffer is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Smolarek has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Smolarek! Laffer working a defensive guard here.

Laffer is going olschool here, as he tries to force Smolarek to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Smolarek shrugs it off.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smolarek is looking to get to half guard. Smolarek wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Laffer with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Laffer has hold of Smolarek's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Smolarek manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Laffer jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Smolarek is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Smolarek and Laffer has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Smolarek is pushing Laffer's head away, looking to escape. Laffer manages to hold on to the position though. Laffer swings around for an armbar but Smolarek sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Laffer's guard. Laffer is trying to keep Smolarek in close.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Laffer avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Smolarek wants to control from the top but Laffer keeps moving.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Nice shot by Smolarek. Excellent takedown into side control there by Laffer. Laffer thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Laffer has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Smolarek! Smolarek tries to lock up and control but Laffer gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Laffer is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Smolarek can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Smolarek has given up his back here. Will Laffer look for the submission or keep pounding away?

Larry Laffer dominated that second round. The cut man is working on Larry Laffer's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Laffer with a poor takedown and Smolarek counters with a straight right hand. Laffer bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Laffer changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Smolarek looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Laffer tries to advance to mount but can't. Laffer trying to control the position but Smolarek is working away. Laffer working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Laffer swings around for an armbar but Smolarek sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Laffer's guard. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Laffer avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Smolarek must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Laffer wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Smolarek is now in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Laffer is staying active underneath Smolarek, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Laffer desperately trying to maintain half guard. Laffer moves into full guard.
Laffer manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Smolarek manages to get himself to full guard.
Laffer stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smolarek swivels though and keeps the full guard. Smolarek is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Smolarek is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Laffer drops back looking for a leg! Smolarek is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smolarek manages to kick Laffer off! Laffer jumps back into Smolarek's guard. Laffer passes easily into side control. Nice work. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smolarek can do anything to dispel that myth. You can see the frustration on Smolarek's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Laffer is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Smolarek is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Laffer is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Smolarek has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Laffer prevents Smolarek from escaping the position. Laffer goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Smolarek has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Laffer but great work by Smolarek. Laffer defending against the ground and pound. Laffer gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Laffer wants to improve his position but Smolarek is controlling well.

Laffer misses with a takedown letting Smolarek counter with a right hand. Laffer shoots in for a takedown but Smolarek shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Larry Laffer. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smolarek throws a sloppy head kick and Laffer moves out of range easily. Larry Laffer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Laffer shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smolarek as he jumps to the side. Laffer dives in and grabs Smolarek's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smolarek pushes down on Laffer's head and hops out. Laffer takes one on the chin but seems OK.
