Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Athrun Zala! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mauricio Rua! The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Ren Mimura and Yukihiro Yamamoto.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rua fails in his attempt to clinch. Rua tries to close the distance and clinch up but Zala swats him away and circles back towards the center. Rua fails in his attempt to clinch. Rua moves in looking to clinch but Zala pushes him off. Rua tries to clinch up. Rua tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Rua is looking to clinch but Zala is avoiding it.
Zala gets the takedown into side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Zala moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Zala works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Rua is trying to escape the position but Zala is controlling the position. Zala scoring with punches and elbows. Rua takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Zala cracks Rua with an elbow. That is naaassty. Zala tries to move into full mount but can't pass Rua's legs. Rua manages to get back to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Zala prevents Rua from standing back up.
Zala is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Zala working Rua over with strikes. Rua looks like he's trying to stand up.
Zala takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Zala working over Rua with some ground and pound. Rua looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Rua is looking for a sweep. Zala is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Rua actively working from the bottom here. Rua looks gassed! The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Zala looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Zala has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Zala working Rua over with strikes here. Zala with a couple of short strikes. Zala controlling the position easily from mount. Zala landing strikes, looking to finish! Rua taking shots to the head. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Zala takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Zala working away from the top, dropping strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Zala scoring with strikes but Rua is staying in there.
Rua is rocked! Zala with shots to the head and body - Rua looks very uncomfortable down there. Zala is landing with some decent strikes but Rua is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Rua is still in real trouble! Can Zala finish him? Zala lands a big elbow - Rua is in trouble! More strikes from the mount and Rua is forced to tap out!
