PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pika Kalei (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robb Spewak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Spewak is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by The German National Anthem. Robb Spewak told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Pika Kalei!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Robb Spewak!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Edson Gomes and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kalei tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Spewak swivels and escapes.
Kalei takes one on the button.
Spewak moves away from the strike by Kalei.
Kalei misses with an uppercut.
Nice defenses there by Spewak.
Kalei walks into a straight right hand from Spewak.


It looks like Pika Kalei has been cut.
Kalei cracks Spewak with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Spewak avoids the body shot from Kalei.
Spewak misses with a kick to the body.
Kalei lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Spewak attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Kalei throws a low kick, looking for Spewak's leg but Spewak calmly moves out of range.
Kalei lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Spewak takes a swing at Kalei's ribcage but misses.
Spewak avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
No joy there for Kalei, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Kalei is looking to clinch but Spewak is avoiding it.
Kalei throws a hook but Spewak avoids it easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kalei looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Kalei closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Spewak did well to prevent Kalei getting side control.
Spewak moves into full guard.

Spewak is looking for a triangle but Kalei pushes his legs off easily.
Spewak manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Spewak trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Spewak is looking to stand but Spewak has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
Kalei tries to reverse the position but Spewak maintains control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Spewak avoids the attempt from Kalei to control.

Kalei sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Kalei tries to get to full guard but Spewak has control of the leg.

Spewak stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Spewak scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Kalei doesn't seem bothered though.

Kalei throws a looping overhand right but Spewak ducks down to avoid it.
Pika Kalei seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Spewak throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Spewak lands a nice looking body shot.
Kalei misses with a leg kick
and Spewak counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Kalei thinking.
Kalei is breathing heavily.
A slow jab from Kalei misses its intended target.
Kalei swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Spewak counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Spewak throws out a loose jab but Kalei uses good head movement to avoid it.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
A telegraphed right hand from Kalei misses the target.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Spewak lands a slapping body shot.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Spewak cracks Kalei with an open hand slap.

Kalei looks to throw a body kick
and Spewak counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Kalei thinking.
A solid leg kick lands there for Spewak.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Kalei moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

and Spewak counters with a straight right hand.

Robb Spewak seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Spewak throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Spewak dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

and Kalei counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Spewak!
Spewak is desperately trying to improve his position but Kalei has a good base and remains in mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Spewak is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Spewak bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Kalei has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Spewak can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Spewak gets to his feet. Kalei looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Spewak is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Kalei rather than just go for the knockout.

and Spewak connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Spewak lands a body shot.

Spewak lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Spewak throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Kalei wants to clinch
and Spewak cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Spewak connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Kalei's hands.

and Spewak counters with an inside leg kick.
Spewak lands a nice hook to Kalei's body. Kalei takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Spewak looks for the body kick but Kalei saw that one coming.
Spewak looks to land a combination. Kalei sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kalei takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Spewak dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Kalei. That did some damage!
Robb Spewak is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Spewak lands a jab to Kalei's midsection.
Kalei takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Spewak jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Kalei closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Jeez, Pika Kalei's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

Spewak has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Kalei dodges the punch combination from Spewak.
Kalei takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Spewak pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Spewak.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Pika Kalei's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:21 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Robb Spewak!
