PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between George Whissell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Urijah Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Whissell comes into the arena with Rose Of Sharon blaring out of the sound system. Griffin has chosen DX as his entrance music. Urijah Griffin has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with George Whissell's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, George Whissell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Urijah Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Steve Smith and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin throws a shot from downtown. Whissell moves away and avoids it.
Griffin throws a right and a left that Whissell avoids nicely.

Whissell shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Griffin is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Whissell is controlling him.
Griffin being controlled here, momentarily.
Griffin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Whissell is one step ahead there.

Griffin working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Whissell doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Whissell manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Griffin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Griffin wants to improve his position but Whissell is controlling well.
Griffin tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Whissell keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Griffin wants to get back to his feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Whissell shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Griffin's guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Griffin rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Whissell moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Griffin throws a lazy right hand but Whissell sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Griffin tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Griffin is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Griffin is trying to control but can't.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Whissell closes this distance looking for a takedown but Griffin circles away.
Whissell takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Griffin throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Whissell.

Whissell looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Griffin!

Griffin rolls, trying to escape but Whissell keeps control of the position.
You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.

Whissell slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Whissell has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Griffin is really stuck here.
Griffin tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Griffin wants to control but Whissell is having none of it.
Whissell sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
George Whissell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Whissell just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
Whissell seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Griffin for as long as he can get away with.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Griffin throws a nice looking combination but Whissell bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Whissell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Griffin as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for George Whissell. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Griffin scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Urijah Griffin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Griffin throws a right hand that Whissell ducks under and follows up with a left that Whissell also avoids with ease.

Whissell feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Whissell, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
