Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Mickey McMahon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ranma Saotome! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and Alec Ball.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McMahon jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Saotome changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. McMahon looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Saotome working away. McMahon prevents Saotome from improving position. McMahon tries to get back to half guard but can't. McMahon sneaks back into half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Saotome tries to stand and escape but McMahon is controlling the position. McMahon looking for submissions from an awkward position here. McMahon is trying to get back to full guard. Saotome is trying to work for a kimura but McMahon is defending well.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. McMahon throws a series of strikes that have Saotome backpedaling.
That's one minute gone in the round. McMahon stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and McMahon wants it to stay on the feet. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Saotome shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Saotome is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and McMahon defends it well. Saotome is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
McMahon is looking to improve his position.
McMahon looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Saotome is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McMahon is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Saotome pulls his head out easily. Saotome is keen to just control but McMahon is a slippery customer. McMahon has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Saotome is working away from the top position though.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. McMahon connects with the punch. Saotome gets the takedown into side control. McMahon sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. McMahon manages to get to full guard.
McMahon is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
McMahon is breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Saotome wants to stand but McMahon has a closed guard, so he can't escape. McMahon has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Saotome can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Saotome passes McMahon's left leg - he's now in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Saotome is controlling the pace.
Saotome wants to stand up but McMahon is controlling the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. McMahon looking for submissions off his back. Saotome is working for a kimura but McMahon is defending it quite comfortably.
Saotome perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. McMahon is pressing down on Saotome's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. McMahon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Saotome decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on McMahon, up you get! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Mickey McMahon will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Saotome looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? McMahon is fending him off so far but Saotome persists. Nope, McMahon circles away and we're back to standing. Saotome gets the takedown into side control. McMahon is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. McMahon flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
McMahon gets back to full guard.
Saotome would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. McMahon throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
McMahon is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Saotome rolls with it to try and escape but McMahon cranks on the arm and Saotome is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
