Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Antonio Chavez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alika Akahi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chavez comes into the arena with La Bamba blaring out of the sound system. Akahi comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Hawaiian Superman kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Akahi fails with the takedown. Akahi gets in close and instigates a clinch. An uppercut to the body lands inside from Akahi. Chavez fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Akahi escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Chavez looks to clinch and Akahi counters with a nice double leg into side control. Chavez won't be happy with that. Akahi has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Akahi shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Chavez napping and manages to drive through into side control!
That's one minute gone in the round. Akahi wants to lay and pray for a moment but Chavez keeps working. Akahi tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Akahi looks gassed! That's three minutes gone in the round. Chavez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Akahi wants to stand but Chavez is controlling his posture from full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Chavez holds on and takes a little breather. Akahi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Chavez swivels though and keeps the full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Alika Akahi dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Chavez rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Akahi moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Akahi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chavez tries to avoid it but Akahi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chavez to the ground. Chavez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Chavez misses with a double jab

Chavez throws a series of punches but Akahi moves out of range. Akahi is trying hard to land a takedown here. Chavez sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Antonio Chavez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Chavez scores with a three punch combo!

That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Chavez has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Akahi off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. Chavez tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Chavez throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Akahi. Chavez misses with a two punch combination.

Akahi throws the left hand but Chavez avoids the punch easily. Chavez looks to score with a jab to the body but Akahi is just out of range. Chavez lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round. Akahi is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Chavez can't fight it off and eventually Akahi manages to take the fight to the floor. Chavez looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Chavez wants to get back to his feet but Akahi is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Akahi looking to sit in guard and control but Chavez gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Chavez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Akahi is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Chavez is controlling him. Chavez passes Akahi's left leg - he's now in half guard. Chavez wants to free his trapped foot but Akahi is holding on for dear life with his legs.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Chavez sitting and controlling from the half guard. Chavez passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Akahi! Chavez controlling the pace for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Chavez working the ground and pound effectively.

It's preventing any offense from Akahi, at least for the moment. Akahi drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Chavez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Akahi has Chavez in his guard.

Chavez is looking to clinch. Chavez shoots for a double leg takedown but Akahi sprawls well. He's pushed Chavez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Chavez misses with a few strikes there.
Akahi doesn't succeed with the takedown and Chavez counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Chavez. Chavez jumps guard but Akahi stands there with Chavez around his waist. Chavez gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Akahi pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Chavez tumbling to the mat - Akahi dives into Chavez's guard. Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - an gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Akahi working some strikes from top position. Chavez keeping moving, preventing Akahi from controlling successfully. Akahi is fighting to break Chavez's control of his arms but Chavez is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Akahi wants to pass the guard but Chavez is keeping the position. Chavez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Akahi is one step ahead there. Chavez has control of Akahi's left arm, preventing Akahi from doing any damage. Antonio Chavez is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Akahi won't allow Chavez to sweep him here. Alika Akahi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Alika Akahi has got the better of the ground game so far. Akahi trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Chavez manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Chavez not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Chavez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Akahi swivels though and keeps the full guard. Chavez is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Chavez stands and steps away. Akahi gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Antonio Chavez. Well Chavez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win...
