PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Luke Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zero Kazama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Zero Kazama!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kazama avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Kazama moves into range and clinches up with Smith.

Kazama is trying to trip Smith. He has hold of a leg but Smith is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Kazama persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Smith trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Smith looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kazama is one step ahead there.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kazama wants to control but Smith postures up.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Smith misses with a takedown attempt - Kazama sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Kazama throws a right and a left that Smith avoids nicely.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Kazama slaps away a takedown attempt from Smith, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Smith is breathing heavily.
Kazama wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.
Kazama is staying active underneath Smith, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Kazama is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Smith scores with a couple of nice shots.
Smith looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Kazama with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Kazama regains full guard. Nicely done.
Smith wants to pass the guard but Kazama is keeping the position.

Smith avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Kazama escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Kazama is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Smith's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kazama is trying to keep Smith in close.
Smith slips nicely into half guard.

Smith thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kazama's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Zero Kazama will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Smith misses with a series of wild punches.

Smith is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Kazama's half guard.

Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kazama swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Luke Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Smith wants to control from the top but Kazama keeps moving.
Smith is working Kazama over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Smith lands a couple of elbows.
Smith throws a strike but Kazama rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Kazama wanted to stand there but Smith had control of the position.
Kazama stands up over Smith, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Smith wants to sweep here but Kazama controlling him for the moment.

Smith is trying to keep Kazama in close.

Kazama is trying to work for a kimura but Smith is defending well.
Smith is trying to control but can't.

Smith is looking to control Kazama's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Smith avoid being mounted?
Smith wants to get back to full guard but Kazama has mounted him!

Kazama has hold of Smith's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Smith manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Smith is squirming around, avoiding Kazama's attempts to control the action.
Smith is just holding on here. Kazama manages to take his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Luke Smith will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Kazama has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smith is working away from the top position though.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kazama throws a series of strikes that have Smith backpedaling.
Smith wants to clinch up but Kazama keeps it at a distance.

Smith feints and as Kazama raises his hands in defense, Smith changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kazama escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kazama trying to keep a closed guard but Smith is proving a slippery customer.
Smith postures up in Kazama's guard and throws a big left but Kazama blocks it.
Smith in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Smith looking to pass the guard.

Kazama pushes Smith off and gets back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Smith gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Kazama might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Smith kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Kazama is pushing down on Smith's leg trying to pass to half guard. Smith is fighting to maintain full guard but Kazama has managed to sneak the leg through.

Smith is trying to stand back up but Kazama is controlling him

Kazama is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Smith keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Smith tries to get to full guard but Kazama has control of the leg.
Smith has hold of Kazama's hands but Kazama slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Smith is trying to maintain the position but Kazama is very close to passing his half guard.

Kazama throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Zero Kazama.
Well Kazama has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
