PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Melvin Guillard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Cain Velasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Melvin Guillard!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Guillard displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Velasquez throws out the jab.
Guillard throws a right and a left that both miss.
Guillard shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Velasquez pinned against the cage. Velasquez gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Velasquez cracks Guillard with an uppercut from hell and Guillard crumples to the canvas, he's out! Oh no, he's recovered and he's grabbed one of Velasquez's legs and pulled him into guard. The ref thought about stopping it there but he's let it go - good reffing!


It looks like Melvin Guillard has been cut.
Velasquez scoring with some ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Velasquez content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Velasquez tries for a takedown but Guillard sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Velasquez scores with a sloppy right hand. Guillard should have avoided that one.
Guillard looks to land a combination but Velasquez avoids it well.
Velasquez shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Guillard as he avoids it easily.

and Guillard counters with a one-two to the body.
Velasquez is breathing heavily.
Guillard moves out of range of the strikes.
Velasquez shoots in looking for a takedown. Guillard tries to sprawl out of it but Velasquez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Guillard manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Velasquez takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Guillard lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Velasquez backs up against the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Velasquez shoots in for a takedown but Guillard shows good takedown defense.
Guillard lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Velasquez circles away quickly and effectively.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Velasquez pushes Guillard away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Guillard gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Velasquez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Velasquez is not content to let Guillard control the position.

Guillard decides to stand back up. Guillard steps back and let's Velasquez get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Cain Velasquez will probably get the nod.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


A punch combination from Velasquez misses.
Guillard circles away from the clinch attempt.
Velasquez shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Guillard as he jumps to the side.

and Guillard holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Guillard breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Guillard scores with a head kick.
Guillard swats away the attempt to clinch by Velasquez.
Velasquez dives in and grabs Guillard's left leg, looking for a takedown. Guillard pushes down on Velasquez's head and hops out.
No luck for Guillard with that takedown attempt.
Melvin Guillard seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Guillard tries to bum rush Velasquez with a series of wild strikes but Velasquez uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Velasquez dives in and grabs Guillard's left leg, looking for a takedown. Guillard pushes down on Velasquez's head and hops out.
Guillard goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Velasquez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Velasquez tries to score a power double leg takedown but Guillard sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Velasquez somewhat.

Guillard rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Velasquez moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
