PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joe Lanza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kurt Angle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Angle has chosen 8 ball mjg (go hard) as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for Joe Lanza has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joe Lanza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kurt Angle!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Dean Styles and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lanza decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Lanza wants to control but Angle is keeping him busy.
Angle is looking to control Lanza's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Angle avoid being mounted?
Angle is looking for a sweep. Lanza is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Angle has his hands clasped together around Lanza's back. He's all about the action.
Angle tries to kick Lanza off but Lanza keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Lanza is looking for a kimura here.
Lanza trying to mount his opponent but Angle defends it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lanza throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Angle tries to get to full guard but Lanza has control of the leg.
Lanza trying to control the action but Angle is working from the bottom.
Lanza wants to get back to his feet.
Angle is trying to stand back up but Lanza is controlling him

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lanza fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Lanza misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Angle tries for a takedown but Lanza circles away easily

and Lanza counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Lanza is breathing heavily.

Lanza is looking for a kimura here.

Lanza is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Angle has managed to free his arm - good work.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Angle can do anything to dispel that myth.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Angle wants to get back to his feet.
Lanza prevents Angle from improving his position.
Angle really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lanza. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Angle is trying to maintain the position but Lanza is very close to passing his half guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Lanza passes into side control, despite Angle's attempt to control the position.
Lanza is looking to take a break and control but Angle is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Angle sneaks back into half guard.
Lanza is thwarting Angle's attempts to control the position.
Lanza not doing much here.
Lanza wants to control but Angle is keeping him busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Lanza dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Lanza misses with a takedown

and Angle counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Lanza is trying to maintain the position but Angle is very close to passing his half guard.
Angle sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Lanza defending well though.
Lanza tries to get to full guard but Angle has control of the leg.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Angle not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Angle is looking to advance position but Lanza won't allow it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Lanza blocking the ground and pound attempt from Angle.

Lanza gets full guard.
Angle stops Lanza from standing up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Angle drives through with a takedown into guard.

Lanza working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Angle doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Lanza is tightening it up a little... Angle has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Angle reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Angle taps out! nice BJJ there by Lanza!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Joe Lanza!
