PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Arm Barr (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dan Connoly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Connoly has chosen Break Stuff - Limp Bizkit as his entrance music. Dan Connoly told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Arm Barr! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Dan Connoly! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Anni Minnemäki.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Barr gets in close and instigates a clinch. Connoly looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Barr missing with knees to the body.
Barr goes for a takedown attempt but Connoly pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Connoly misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Connoly shoots in for a takedown but Barr shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Barr could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Barr misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Barr closes the distance and clinches. Barr has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Connoly avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Arm Barr. That's going to take a lot out of him. Barr lands an elbow just above Connoly 's eye. Barr drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Barr just misses with a elbow thrown towards Connoly's brow. Barr manages to break the clinch.

Barr doesn't manage to clinch there - Connoly circles away.
Barr pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Barr tries to clinch up but Connoly circles away and keeps his distance.
That's one minute gone in the round. Barr tries to close the distance and clinch up but Connoly swats him away and circles back towards the center. Barr fails with an attempt to clinch.
Barr tries to clinch up. Barr shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Barr stops Connoly from getting back to his feet.
Barr decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet. Connoly tries to close the distance and clinch but Barr swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Connoly scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Barr doesn't seem bothered though. Barr closes this distance looking for a takedown but Connoly circles away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Barr leaves Connoly with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Barr forces Connoly back against the cage and clinches. A nice left hand lands by Barr.
Connoly escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Barr lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. Connoly gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Barr counters with a single leg into guard. Connoly didn't expect that. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Connoly trying to keep a closed guard but Barr is proving a slippery customer.
Barr sitting in guard, not really doing much. Connoly working for submissions but it's allowed Barr to get to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Connoly works his way to full guard. Good work. Barr won't allow Connoly to get back to his feet. Connoly throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Connoly is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Barr trying to control but Connoly is working from the bottom. Connoly escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Barr gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Arm Barr dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Barr tries for a takedown but Connoly circles away easily and Connoly counters with a takedown into side control. Barr gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Barr is pressing down on Connoly's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Barr keeping full guard, as Connoly tries to pass. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Connoly in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
That's one minute gone in the round. Connoly trying to control but Barr is working from the bottom. Barr is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Connoly is controlling him. Connoly wants to stand and escape but instead Barr has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Barr preventing the sweep.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Barr ducks right into an uppercut from Connoly. Barr drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Barr working away. Connoly is pushing Barr's head away, looking to escape. Barr manages to hold on to the position though. Connoly tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Barr stands up and we're back to a striking position. Barr tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Connoly paws at him with a jab and circles away. A slow jab from Barr misses its intended target. Connoly with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Barr misses with a takedown attempt and Connoly counters by clinching up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Connoly takes an elbow to the forehead. Barr missing with knees to the body.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch. Barr with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Barr wants a takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Arm Barr. That's going to take a lot out of him. Connoly has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Barr uses from the top position. Connoly is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Connoly is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Barr passes Connoly's left leg - he's now in half guard. Connoly is looking for a sweep. Barr is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Dan Connoly will probably get the nod - 10:9. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!
Barr fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Barr gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Connoly connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Connoly moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination. Connoly displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Barr. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Arm Barr. That's going to take a lot out of him. Connoly darts in and clinches Barr up against the cage. Connoly breaks from the clinch.
Connoly rushes Barr and presses him up against the cage. Connoly blocks an elbow strike. Barr using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Connoly has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Connoly is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. A frustrated look appears on Connoly's face as he tries to break the clinch. Connoly can't get the takedown.
Barr wants a takedown but no success here.
With the fighters up against the cage, Barr throws an elbow but misses. Connoly prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Barr tries to circle away but Connoly has him pinned against the cage. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Barr is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Connoly is defending well for now. Barr manages to break the clinch.
Connoly shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Barr pinned against the cage. Barr gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Connoly fails in his attempt to clinch. Barr tries to clinch up and Connoly counters with a nice double leg into side control. Barr won't be happy with that. Barr struggling a bit here. Connoly has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Connoly drives through and clinches with Barr against the cage.

Connoly goes for a takedown in the clinch but Barr prevents it.
Barr jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Connoly walks away with a smile on his face. Barr gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Connoly keeps the fight on the outside. Barr shoots and misses and Connoly counters with a nice body kick.
Arm Barr is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Barr fails in his attempt to clinch. Connoly throws a nice looking combination but Barr bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Connoly throws a head kick that half lands.
Connoly fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Barr shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Connoly but Connoly pushes him off and we're back to square one.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Connoly shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Connoly showed some decent athleticism there. Barr has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Connoly is working away from the top position though. Connoly trying to pass the guard but Barr defending well. Connoly works his way into full mount!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Barr is squirming around, avoiding Connoly's attempts to control the action. Connoly takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Connoly trying to control but Barr is having none of it.
And that's the end of the fight! Dan Connoly comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I think Connoly has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
