PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Greg Horace (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fredo Corleone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Corleone comes into a darkened arena with his song building. The Godfather Waltz kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Greg Horace! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Fredo Corleone! The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Russell Pearce and Reed Andrews.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Corleone thows a body shot but no joy. Corleone tries to clinch there but Horace circles away.
Horace looks for a takedown but Corleone sprawls well. Corleone tries for a takedown but Horace circles away easily and Horace counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Horace. Corleone has his hands on Horace's head, controlling the position. Corleone escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Horace gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Horace wants to pass the guard but Corleone is keeping the position. Corleone scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Corleone throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Horace counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Horace is trying to work for a kimura but Corleone is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Corleone is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Horace pulls his head out easily. Horace is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Horace is working for an americana but Corleone has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Horace was thinking about the submission. Horace has gone for a leg lock! Corleone slips out almost immediately though and dives into Horace's guard. Corleone trying to control but Horace is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Corleone gets to his feet - Horace follows without any prompting. Fredo Corleone seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Corleone wants to clinch but Horace slips to the side and Horace counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Horace. Horace stops Corleone from standing up. Corleone is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Corleone tries to land a sweep but no joy. Corleone keeping full guard, as Horace tries to pass. Horace is breathing heavily. Corleone has his foot on Horace's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Horace works his way back into a safe position though. Horace postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Corleone is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Horace, into his guard. Horace keeping moving, preventing Corleone from controlling successfully.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Corleone distracts Horace with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Corleone thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Corleone's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Corleone slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Corleone works over Horace with some ground and pound from guard. Corleone trying to control the position from guard on top but Horace is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Corleone stands and steps away. Horace gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Corleone shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Corleone is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Horace is just riding it out for now. Corleone eventually gives up the hold. Horace is trying to get back to full guard. Corleone frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Corleone is standing up, even though he is in mount. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Corleone misses with a double jab
and Horace counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Fredo Corleone will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Corleone drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Corleone wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Horace, who protects the arm well. Horace is trying to get back to half guard. Corleone scoring with punches from side control. Horace prevents Corleone from improving position. Corleone content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Corleone scoring with punches and elbows. Corleone looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's one minute gone in the round. Horace is looking to regain half guard here but Corleone keeps moving and retains side control. Horace is working hard here to advance position. Corleone decides to stand back up. Corleone steps back and let's Horace get back to his feet. Excellent takedown into side control there by Corleone. Corleone is trying to get an arm triangle but Horace is defending well. Horace taking punishment in the form of punches.
Corleone lands an elbow. Corleone cracks Horace with a big right hand but Horace just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Corleone remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Corleone tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Corleone cracks Horace with a big elbow. Horace sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Corleone landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Corleone has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Corleone takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Corleone is nestled in close to Horace, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Corleone stalling. Corleone stands up out of the half guard. Excellent takedown into side control there by Corleone. Corleone decides to stand back up. Corleone steps back and let's Horace get back to his feet. Corleone tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Horace paws at him with a jab and circles away. Horace walks forward, straight into a front kick from Corleone. Corleone drives through with a takedown into guard. Corleone trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Corleone wanted to stand there but Horace had control of the position. Corleone has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Horace to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Corleone is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Horace pulls down on the head and he's put Corleone to sleep! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:01 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Greg Horace!
