Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Thomas Benoit! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Balwinder Singh! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Dillan Fox and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Singh throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Singh fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Benoit avoids it really well and circles away. Benoit could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Singh leaves Benoit with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Singh defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Benoit. Benoit throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Singh misses with a two punch combination.
Benoit is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Singh's half guard. Benoit is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Singh defends it well. Singh regains full guard. Nicely done. Singh wants to sweep here but Benoit controlling him for the moment. Benoit throws a strike but Singh rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
That's one minute gone in the round. Benoit keeping full guard, as Singh tries to pass. Benoit looking to hit a scissor sweep but Singh is one step ahead there. Singh in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Benoit avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Benoit looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Singh passes into half guard.
Singh is pressing down on Benoit's thigh, looking to free his foot. Benoit is holding on for now. Singh is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Benoit defends it well. Benoit wants to get back to full guard but Singh has mounted him! Singh cracks Benoit with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Benoit really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Benoit on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Benoit tries to get out of the position. Singh breaks from Benoit's wrist control and lands an elbow. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Singh controlling from the full mount. Benoit tries to hold on but Singh postures up. Singh misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Benoit is wriggling around trying to escape.
Singh avoids the attempt from Benoit to control. Benoit wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Benoit is breathing heavily. Singh scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Benoit?
Benoit tries to get back to half guard but can't. Singh looking to finish Benoit with some ground and pound. This is bad for Benoit! Benoit is squirming around, avoiding Singh's attempts to control the action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Balwinder Singh dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Benoit shoots in and drives through. Singh sprawls well. Benoit pushes Singh up against the cage in a clinch. Singh with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Singh breaks the clinch.
Benoit will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Benoit throws a nice looking combination but Singh bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Singh cracks Benoit with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Singh has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Benoit to stand back up! Singh drops his shoulder and cracks Benoit with a huge uppercut! Benoit goes down! Can Singh finish him?
Benoit is rocked! Singh arches his back and unloads with a massive left and a right! Benoit's eyes roll back into his head, he's out cold! The ref dives in to stop the fight - wow, they were hard shots!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Balwinder Singh!
