PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Floyd Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jani Janis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Floyd Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jani Janis!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Marco Blurström and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Janis misses with a series of wild punches.
Janis slaps away a takedown attempt from Jones, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Jones has Janis up against the cage in a clinch.
Jones tries for a takedown but Janis manages to get underhooks.
Jones is pushing Janis up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Janis has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Jones is trying to keep an underhook but Janis manages to get the takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Janis not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Jones kicks Janis off and gets back to his feet.
Janis throws a hook to the side of Jones's head but Jones sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Jones dodges the punch combination from Janis.

Jones gets the takedown into side control.
Janis pushes Jones away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Jones gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Janis tries to buck Jones off but Jones is having none of it.
Jones throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Janis is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Jones asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Jones stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Janis throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Janis throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Jones was covering up waiting for the punch and Janis finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Jones is trying to control the position but Janis postures up.
Janis is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Jones is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Janis is looking to work some ground and pound but Jones has wrist control.
Jones looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Jones is breathing heavily.
Janis pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Jones is keeping the position for now.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Jones on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Jones.

Janis attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Janis connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

Janis forces Jones back against the cage and clinches.
Janis tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Jones keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Janis's efforts to push away.
Jones jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Janis walks away with a smile on his face. Jones gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Jones tries for a takedown but Janis sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Jones fails with a takedown attempt.
Jones avoids the body shot from Janis.
Janis shoots for a takedown but Jones saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Janis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jones is trying to defend but Janis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Janis not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Jones regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Janis.
Jones avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Janis thows a big elbow that misses.
Jones wants to stand and escape but Janis is having none of it.
Janis working some strikes from top position.
Janis scoring with punches to the head and body.
Jones working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Janis.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Janis shoots in looking for a takedown. Jones tries to sprawl out of it but Janis keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jones manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Janis throws a right and a left that Jones avoids nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jani Janis dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Janis changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Jones tries to avoid it but Janis manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Jones to the ground. Jones escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Jones looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Janis shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Jones pinned against the cage. Jones gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Jones shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Jones is looking to take a break and control but Janis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Janis tries to kick Jones off but Jones keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Janis has hold of Jones's hands but Jones slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Janis tries to kick Jones off but Jones keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jones in particular looking to stall.

Jones stands up and beckons Janis to join him on the feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Janis clinches with his opponent.

Jones escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Jones shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Janis is trying to stand up.
Jones controlling the pace for now.
Janis is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Janis sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

Janis makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Jones shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Jones was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Janis avoids a series of strikes thrown by Jones.
Jones wants to control the pace but Janis is squirming around nicely.

Jones goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Janis is on top in guard.
Floyd Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Jones is trying to keep Janis in close.
Jones keeping moving, preventing Janis from controlling successfully.

Jones has an active guard here but Janis has managed to pass into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Jones's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Janis lands a nice short elbow.
Janis not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Janis tries to pass to full mount but Jones defends it.
Jones wants to control but Janis is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Janis tries to clinch but Jones moves away

so Jones counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Janis trying to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Janis pushes Jones off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Janis shoots in but Jones avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Jones drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Jones tries to stand but Janis is controlling from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Janis is on top in guard.
Jones is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Janis stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Janis throws a right and a left that Jones avoids nicely.
Janis tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Janis somewhat.

Jones connects with a high kick.
Jones tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Janis counters with a nice low kick that buckles Jones's knee momentarily.
Jones misses with a few strikes there.
Janis throws a series of punches but Jones moves out of range.

Jones moves into the clinch successfully.

Janis breaks the clinch.
Jones stuffs the takedown.
Floyd Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jani Janis.
Jones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Janis but Janis pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A punch combination from Janis misses.
Janis misses with a two punch combination.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Jones tries to clinch but Janis moves away
and Janis counters with a lovely straight right hand!
A head kick by Janis misses
and Jones makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Jones lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Jones.
Janis tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Janis somewhat.
Jones fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Janis misses with a low kick.
Jones avoids a kick to the body.
Jones throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Janis.
Jones tries to clinch up but Janis circles away and keeps his distance.
Janis tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Janis tries to close the distance and clinch but Jones swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Jones fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Janis, pushing him back against the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
Floyd Jones showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
