2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Julian Valdez! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Sosuke Kotani and Tatsuya Matsuyama.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Jones defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Valdez. Jones fails in his attempt to clinch. Jones closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Valdez did well to prevent Jones getting side control. Valdez is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Jones pulls his head out easily. Valdez looks gassed! Valdez looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Jones lands strikes from half guard. Valdez looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Jones is keen to just control but Valdez is a slippery customer. Jones is looking for a kimura here.

Jones tries to control but Valdez wriggling away. Valdez manages to regain half guard. Good work. Jones is trying to control. Valdez wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Valdez manages to regain half guard. Good work. Valdez moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Valdez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jones manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Jones trying to control but Valdez is working from the bottom. Valdez had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Jones is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Valdez Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Jones's back instead. Valdez is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Jones defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. Valdez keeps control of the position as Jones tries to break free.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Jones holding both Valdez 's hands and preventing any damage. Jones is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Valdez gets his way!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Valdez is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Jones knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Jones for a finish. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Valdez is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Jones defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. Jones can't escape the position.

Julian Valdez dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Jones moves in looking to clinch but Valdez pushes him off. Jones gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Valdez counters with a shoot takedown. Jones fights it but they end up in guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Valdez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Valdez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Jones is on top in guard.

Jones knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Valdez on the ground. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Valdez throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Jones has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Jones doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Valdez is tightening it up a little... Jones has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Jones reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Jones taps out! nice BJJ there by Valdez!
