The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sores but Sores pushes him off and we're back to square one. Sores tries for a takedown but Mendez circles away easily and Mendez counters with a takedown into side control. Mendez is looking to take a break and control but Sores is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Mendez controlling from side mount. Sores tries to buck Mendez off but Mendez is having none of it. Mendez lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy. Mendez working away. Mendez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mendez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
That's one minute gone in the round. Sores is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Sores wants to get back to his feet but Mendez is dominant here and he's now got Sores's back! Sores can't escape the position.
A lull in the action here.
Sores is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Mendez gets his way!
Sores really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mendez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Mendez scores with punches and elbows.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Sores can't escape the position.
Mendez trying to control momentarily.
Mendez is working for the choke. I would put my money on him to finish from this position. He's rolled onto his back and has dragged Sores with him. Sores is trying to defend but Mendez has an arm under the chin now! Sores grimaces and is forced to tap out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:38 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Gregores Mendez!
