Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mo Hursey! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Hanlon! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Daniel Cesar and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hursey keeps the fight on the outside. Hursey shoots in for a double leg but Hanlon sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Hursey dives in and grabs Hanlon's left leg, looking for a takedown. Hanlon pushes down on Hursey's head and hops out. Hanlon drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hursey can't do much from the bottom here. Hanlon advances nicely into full mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hanlon cracks Hursey with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Hanlon can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Hursey is looking to escape. Hursey is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Hanlon sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Hursey is trying desperately to improve position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hursey tries to lock up and control but Hanlon gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Hanlon looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. Hursey wants to control but Hanlon is having none of it. Hursey is trying desperately to improve position. Hanlon is looking to work his way around to Hursey's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position. Hanlon trying to control but Hursey is having none of it. That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Hanlon can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Hursey is looking to escape. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Hanlon looking for a guillotine from mount but Hursey is having none of it. Hanlon content just to control the position here. Hanlon tries to control but Hursey wriggling away. Hanlon might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hursey kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Hanlon avoids the attempt from Hursey to control. Hursey wants to try and get back to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hursey is looking to improve his position but Hanlon isn't that keen on the idea. Hursey wants to control but Hanlon is having none of it. Hanlon wants to control the pace but Hursey is squirming around nicely. Hanlon is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Hursey has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Hursey is looking to get to half guard. Hanlon trying to control but he's not successful this time. Hanlon is looking to work his way around to Hursey's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position. Hursey tries to hold on but Hanlon postures up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Hursey is squirming around, avoiding Hanlon's attempts to control the action. Hursey is wriggling around trying to escape.
Hanlon has hold of Hursey's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Hursey manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Hursey is looking to improve his position but Hanlon isn't that keen on the idea. Hursey is breathing heavily. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Hanlon takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Hanlon trying to control but Hursey is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
John Hanlon dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Hursey bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Hanlon is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Hursey's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Hanlon is trying to maintain the position but Hursey is very close to passing his half guard. Hanlon is looking to improve his position.
Hanlon moves into full guard.
Hursey throwing strikes but missing. Hursey postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Hanlon had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Hursey is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Hanlon Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Hursey's back instead.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hursey rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Hursey actively working from the bottom here. Hanlon wants to pass to mount but Hursey is defending the position. Hanlon is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Hursey defends it well. Hursey knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hanlon on the ground. Hanlon wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hursey keeps working. Hanlon is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Hursey doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Hanlon. Hanlon trying to mount his opponent but Hursey defends it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Hursey actively working from the bottom here. Hanlon is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Hanlon is keen to just control but Hursey is a slippery customer. Hursey is looking for a sweep. Hanlon is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Hursey looking for submissions off his back. Hanlon seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Hursey is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
