1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Phoenix! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Alan Glass and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Porttikongi has managed to clinch.

It looks like Paul Phoenix has been cut. Phoenix's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. No luck with that takedown attempt from Phoenix. Phoenix tries for a takedown but Porttikongi sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Alistair Porttikongi seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Phoenix scores with a takedown into Porttikongi's guard. Porttikongi pulls Phoenix in close to his closed guard and prevents Phoenix from doing any damage or advancing position. Porttikongi had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Phoenix defends it easily. Phoenix is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Porttikongi wants it to stay on the feet. Porttikongi misses with an uppercut. Phoenix tries to close the distance and clinch up but Porttikongi swats him away and circles back towards the center. Phoenix will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Porttikongi up against the ropes. Porttikongi digs a right hand into Phoenix's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Phoenix's gas tank. Porttikongi prevents Phoenix from breaking the clinch. Porttikongi tries to score a body lock takedown but Phoenix shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Porttikongi works on Phoenix's body with a couple of short punches. Porttikongi lands a right hand that snaps the head of Phoenix backwards. Porttikongi drops down looking for an ankle pick but Phoenix pulls his leg out and moves away.

Phoenix has Porttikongi pressed up against the ropes and is working for takedown. Porttikongi manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Porttikongi is trying to trip Phoenix. He has hold of a leg but Phoenix is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Porttikongi persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Porttikongi looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Phoenix looking to hit a scissor sweep but Porttikongi is one step ahead there. Porttikongi tries to bum rush Phoenix with a series of wild strikes but Phoenix uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Phoenix tries for a takedown. No joy.

Horrible takedown by Phoenix or perhaps it was just good defense by Porttikongi which made him look bad. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Porttikongi darts in trying to clinch and Phoenix counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Porttikongi's guard now. Porttikongi wants to take his opponent's back but Phoenix doesn't allow it. Phoenix tries to lock up and control but Porttikongi gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Porttikongi trying to control but he's not successful this time. Phoenix tries to improve his position but instead Porttikongi has taken his back! Porttikongi is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Porttikongi wants to control but Phoenix is keeping busy. Porttikongi working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet. Porttikongi has the hooks in. Phoenix is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Phoenix looking very determined here, making life difficult for Porttikongi.
