PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Brian Callaghan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tyson Rios (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Brian Callaghan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Tyson Rios!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Kenichi Hosakawa and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rios stuffs the takedown attempt from Callaghan. Callaghan gets slowly back to his feet.
Rios keeps the fight on the outside.
Rios swats away the attempt to clinch by Callaghan.

Rios shoots in and bounces Callaghan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Rios stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Callaghan swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rios wants to control from the top but Callaghan keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Callaghan manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Rios should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Callaghan lands a big elbow.
Rios is looking to get to half guard.
Rios wants to hold on but Callaghan pushes him away.

Rios wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Callaghan can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rios is looking to escape.
Rios is in all sorts of trouble here.
Rios is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Callaghan moves to take his opponent's back.
Rios turns into Callaghan and is now in his guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Callaghan is looking for a triangle but Rios pushes his legs off easily.

Callaghan has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Rios off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Callaghan is breathing heavily.

Rios changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Callaghan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Rios decides to stand back up.

Callaghan jumps into guard, dragging Rios to the mat.
Rios slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rios slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

It looks like Brian Callaghan has been cut.
Rios wants to control but Callaghan is keeping him busy.

Callaghan regains full guard. Nicely done.

Rios gets to his feet. Callaghan looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Callaghan fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Rios has a takedown stuffed.
Brian Callaghan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tyson Rios.

It looks like Tyson Rios has been cut.

Callaghan clinches.
The is referee keeping an eye on Rios - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Rios wants to get back to striking at distance but Callaghan won't allow it.
Rios slows down the pace here.
Callaghan tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Rios smiles and moves away.

and Callaghan counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Callaghan.
Callaghan is pressed up against the cage. Rios has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Callaghan down to the mat. Rios avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Callaghan moves into the clinch successfully.
Callaghan misses with a knee strike.
Callaghan tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Callaghan drops down looking for an ankle pick but Rios pulls his leg out and moves away.

and Rios counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Callaghan is controlling Rios's posture.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tyson Rios dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


The fight stays on the outside here - Callaghan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Rios stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Callaghan wants to control but Rios is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Rios in particular looking to stall.

Rios can't escape the position.
Rios sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Rios is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Callaghan's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Callaghan's back!

Rios has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Callaghan has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Rios is breathing heavily.
Callaghan is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
Rios lands a shot to the head.
Callaghan tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Rios trying to control but Callaghan is having none of it.

Callaghan keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Rios jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Callaghan is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Callaghan and Rios has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Callaghan tries to lock up and control but Rios gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Rios wants to control the pace but Callaghan is squirming around nicely.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Callaghan slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Rios is looking for a kimura but Callaghan is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Rios to get the leverage.

Tyson Rios has got the better of the ground game so far.
Callaghan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Callaghan trying to hold on to Rios's head to control him but Rios postures up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Callaghan is staying active underneath Rios, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Rios prevents Callaghan from improving his position.
Rios wants to pass the guard but Callaghan is defending well.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Callaghan checks a leg kick.

and Callaghan counters with a nice double leg into side control. Rios won't be happy with that.

Rios controlling the position for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tyson Rios showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
That's time! Callaghan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Callaghan can't keep his opponent in guard - Rios advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Rios misses with a head shot. Callaghan uses the momentum to regain guard.

Rios takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Callaghan is on top in guard.

Rios has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Callaghan can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Callaghan makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Rios working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Callaghan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Callaghan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Rios wants to stand and escape but Callaghan is having none of it.

Callaghan thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Callaghan stands and steps away. Rios gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Brian Callaghan has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Rios preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Rios has his feet on Callaghan's thighs here. He's pushed Callaghan off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Callaghan screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
