Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renato Rua! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mirko Cro Cop! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rua rushes Cro Cop and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Cro Cop is looking to break free of the clinch but Rua has double underhooks. Rua gets underhooks to prevent Cro Cop's takedown attempt.
Rua manages to pull guard.
Cro Cop working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Cro Cop cracks Rua with a solid left hand. Cro Cop really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rua. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Cro Cop throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Rua works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Cro Cop working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Rua's head. Rua not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Cro Cop trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Rua looking for a sweep. Not yet Rua, not yet. Cro Cop must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Cro Cop distracts Rua with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Rua is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Cro Cop preventing the sweep. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rua lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Cro Cop! Cro Cop is in all sorts of trouble here.
Rua breaks from Cro Cop's wrist control and lands an elbow.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rua working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Cro Cop looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Rua! Submission of the night perhaps?
