PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between DJ Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zack Hitana (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, DJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Zack Hitana!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Thiago Cunha and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Penn shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Penn looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Penn is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hitana is just riding it out for now. Penn eventually gives up the hold.
Hitana tries to roll over but Penn keeps him under control.
Hitana is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Penn looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Hitana is fending him off so far but Penn persists. Nope, Hitana circles away and we're back to standing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Penn shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Hitana looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Penn is fighting to break Hitana's control of his arms but Hitana is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Penn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Hitana trying to keep a closed guard but Penn is proving a slippery customer.

Hitana keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Hitana tries to clinch there but Penn circles away.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Hitana sprawls well. Hitana wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Penn gets slowly back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Hitana tries to clinch but Penn moves out of range.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Penn shoots for a takedown but Hitana saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

DJ Penn dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Hitana is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Penn fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hitana tries to clinch up but Penn circles away and keeps his distance.

Penn shoots in and drives through. Hitana sprawls well.
Hitana tries to close the distance and clinch but Penn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
DJ Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Penn ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Hitana is looking to clinch.
Penn closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hitana circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for DJ Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Penn will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
The fight stays on the outside here - Hitana looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hitana tries to close the distance and clinch but Penn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Zack Hitana showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Hitana tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Penn paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Hitana displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Penn.
Hitana tries to clinch up.
Penn fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Penn shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hitana as he avoids it easily.
Penn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for DJ Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Penn looks to land a left hand but Hitana moved out of range nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
No luck for Penn with that takedown attempt.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Penn.
Penn misses with a series of wild punches.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Penn shoots for a double leg takedown but Hitana sprawls well. He's pushed Penn's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Zack Hitana comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hitana has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
