PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Aoki Matsumoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Adam Saburo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Aoki Matsumoto!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Adam Saburo!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some wild striking there from Saburo.
Saburo bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Saburo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Matsumoto swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Matsumoto scores a takedown into full mount!
Saburo trying desperately to get to his feet.

Matsumoto looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Saburo can't escape the position.

Matsumoto goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Saburo is on top in guard.

Saburo with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Saburo postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Saburo looking to sit in guard and control but Matsumoto gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Matsumoto is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Saburo is trying to control the position but Matsumoto postures up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Matsumoto has gone for a leg lock! Saburo slips out almost immediately though and dives into Matsumoto's guard.
Matsumoto is breathing heavily.
Saburo trying to control but Matsumoto is working from the bottom.
Saburo stands and throws Matsumoto's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Saburo moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Saburo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Matsumoto is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Saburo stands up and beckons Matsumoto to his feet.
Saburo slaps away a takedown attempt from Matsumoto, before circling back to the center of the mat.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Matsumoto closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Saburo did well to prevent Matsumoto getting side control.
Saburo wants to control but Matsumoto is keeping busy.
Saburo works his way to full guard. Good work.
Saburo trying to keep a closed guard but Matsumoto is proving a slippery customer.

A close round but Adam Saburo will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Saburo fails with the takedown

and Matsumoto counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Saburo's guard now.
Matsumoto tries to free his leg and advance position but Saburo is retaining full guard.

Matsumoto drops back, looking for a kneebar! Saburo looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Saburo looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Saburo!
Matsumoto tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Saburo wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Saburo stands up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Saburo dives in and grabs Matsumoto's left leg, looking for a takedown. Matsumoto pushes down on Saburo's head and hops out.
Saburo tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Matsumoto swivels and escapes.
Aoki Matsumoto has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Adam Saburo.

Matsumoto thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Saburo wants to stand up but Matsumoto is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Matsumoto has gone for a leg lock! Saburo slips out almost immediately though and dives into Matsumoto's guard.

Saburo wants to lay and pray for a moment but Matsumoto keeps working.

Matsumoto is looking to improve his position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Matsumoto looking for a kimura from the bottom but Saburo passes into side control!

Saburo working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Matsumoto gets back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Matsumoto has his foot on Saburo's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Saburo works his way back into a safe position though.
Saburo would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Aoki Matsumoto overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Saburo is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Saburo is looking to take a break and control but Matsumoto is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Matsumoto is trying to get back to half guard.
Saburo wants to control but Matsumoto is keeping him busy.
Saburo working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Matsumoto tries to bench press Saburo off him but Saburo keeps the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Matsumoto counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Matsumoto is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Saburo holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Saburo wants to control but Matsumoto is keeping busy.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Aoki Matsumoto.
I think Matsumoto has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
