PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Barrett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Howard Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that John Barrett has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily John Barrett seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Barrett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Howard Jones!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones stuffs the takedown attempt from Barrett. Barrett gets slowly back to his feet.
Jones will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Barrett tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Jones tries to clinch there but Barrett circles away.
Jones throws a head kick but Barrett moves out of range.
Jones throws a one two combo.
Barrett scores with a one two! Jones had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.


It looks like Howard Jones has been cut.
Jones swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Barrett counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Jones avoids a punch combination nicely.
Barrett is trying hard to land a takedown here. Jones sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Barrett misses with a few strikes there.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Barrett as he jumps to the side.

Barrett fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Barrett. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Barrett will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Jones crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Barrett - the referee stops the clock and Jones gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Barrett. Jones manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Barrett circles away quickly and effectively.
Barrett stuffs the takedown attempt from Jones. Jones gets slowly back to his feet.

Barrett shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Barrett wants to control but Jones is keeping him busy.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Jones can do anything to dispel that myth.

Barrett uses his free foot to push down on Jones's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Jones.

Jones tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Barrett paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Barrett slips a jab and a cross from Jones.
Barrett lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Barrett tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Jones just stands there and leans against the cage.
Barrett is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Barrett pulls guard.
Barrett is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones advances position into side control!
Barrett regains half guard.
Jones misses with a head shot. Barrett uses the momentum to regain guard.

Barrett pulls Jones in close to prevent any damage.
Jones throws and elbow that misses. Barrett uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jones's guard. Nice move by Barrett!
Barrett wants to control from the top but Jones keeps moving.
Barrett is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Barrett in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Barrett slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Barrett stands up and waves to Jones to follow him.
Nice takedown defense from Jones. No joy for Barrett on that attempt.

Jones has closed the distance and engaged Barrett in a clinch.

Barrett jumps into guard, dragging Jones to the mat.

Jones gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Barrett darts in and clinches Jones up against the cage.
Jones is working for takedown but Barrett is calmly controlling the position for now.

Barrett decides to pull guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Jones's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Jones got a little sloppy there for a moment and Barrett has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Jones has managed to get both his arms back between Barrett's legs - danger averted.

Barrett is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jones is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Jones lands a couple of digs.
Jones stands up over Barrett, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Barrett manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Jones manages to get himself to full guard.
Jones wants to get back to his feet but Barrett passes into half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Barrett has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Jones defend it? Barrett steps over the head and cranks it - Jones is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Barrett!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:15 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Barrett!
