Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Mir! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Abel Aziz! The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Alan Glass and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Aziz wants to clinch. Aziz tries to clinch up but Mir circles away and keeps his distance. Mir moves into range and clinches up with Aziz. Mir pulls guard. Aziz wants to control from the top but Mir keeps moving. Mir uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Aziz closes this distance looking for a takedown but Mir circles away. Aziz fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Aziz throws an overhand right that lands on Mir's shoulder, as Mir tries to avoid the shot. Mir stuffs the takedown. Frank Mir has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Abel Aziz.
That's one minute gone in the round. Aziz shoots for a double leg takedown but Mir sprawls well. He's pushed Aziz's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Aziz tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Mir counters with a shoot takedown. Aziz fights it but they end up in guard. Mir drops back, looking for a kneebar! Aziz looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Aziz looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Aziz! Aziz trying to control the position but Mir is working away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mir is trying to control Aziz's posture but Aziz avoids it. Mir could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Aziz fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Mir is trying to get back to his feet. Mir tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Aziz easily slips into full mount! Mir tries to lock up and control but Aziz gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Mir is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control. Mir regains half guard. Mir pushes Aziz off looking to stand but Aziz dives back in and keeps control.
Aziz takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment. Aziz working the head and body with strikes. Still in half guard, Aziz seems content to control. Mir is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment. Mir is breathing heavily. Mir is trying to stand.
Aziz is keen to just control but Mir is a slippery customer. Mir is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Aziz wants to pass to mount but Mir is defending the position.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Aziz gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily so Mir counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Aziz utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Aziz wants to stand but Mir is controlling the position. Mir has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Mir has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Aziz is proving hard to escape from. Aziz lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Mir! Aziz is going olschool here, as he tries to force Mir to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Mir shrugs it off. Mir is trying desperately to improve position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Frank Mir dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Aziz chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Mir can pounce on him.
Aziz gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Mir counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Mir escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Mir throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Mir tries to clinch up and Aziz counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mir won't be happy with that. Aziz working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. You can see the frustration on Mir's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mir throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done! Aziz shoots and misses and Mir counters with a good, hard body kick but Aziz shrugs it off. Mir gets in close and instigates a clinch. Mir breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Mir fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Aziz sprawls well initially but Mir persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mir working Aziz over with strikes. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Aziz is trying to control but can't.
Mir seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Mir seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Mir working Aziz over with strikes. Aziz gets full guard. Mir gets to his feet - Aziz follows without any prompting. Mir looks to land a combination. Aziz sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Mir moves into the clinch successfully.
Mir jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Aziz walks away with a smile on his face. Mir gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Frank Mir is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Aziz clinches but Mir breaks the clinch and Mir holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mir no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Aziz sitting in guard, not really doing much. Frank Mir overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Mir keeping full guard, as Aziz tries to pass. Aziz is looking to stand up but Mir won't let him. Mir is pulling down on Aziz's head to control his posture. Aziz wants to stand but Mir is controlling his posture from full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Aziz sitting in guard here, content to control. Mir is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Frank Mir dominated that second round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Mir lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Aziz backs up against the cage.
Aziz misses with a takedown attempt and Mir counters with a nice leg kick. Mir pushes Aziz up against the cage in a clinch. Mir jumps guard and drags Aziz to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Mir wants to stand and escape but Aziz is having none of it. Mir looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Aziz trying to control but Mir is working from the bottom. Mir scrambles and gets back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round. Aziz feints and as Mir raises his hands in defense, Aziz changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Mir on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Mir tries to get out of the position. Mir is looking to stand back up but Aziz counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Mir. Mir wants to control but Aziz is keeping busy and won't allow it. Aziz lands strikes from half guard. Mir is trying to stand.
Mir wants to get back to full guard. Aziz wants to take a breather but Mir is having none of it. Aziz wants to free his trapped foot but Mir is holding on for dear life with his legs. Mir tries to kick Aziz off but Aziz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Mir clinches with his opponent.
Aziz jumps into guard, dragging Mir to the mat.
Aziz working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mir doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mir manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Mir with a nice head shot there. Aziz pulls Mir in close to prevent any damage. Mir connects with a couple of short punches.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir stopping the sweep attempt from Aziz. Aziz is trying to control the position but Mir postures up. Frank Mir is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Mir stopping the sweep attempt from Aziz.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Mir closes the distance and pushes Aziz back into the cage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Mir has Aziz pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Aziz manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing. Aziz is trying to force a seperation but Mir has the dominant position. Aziz wants to break free but Mir has control.
Aziz works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Mir has his hands on Aziz's head, controlling the position. Mir has his feet on Aziz's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work. Aziz misses with a takedown so Mir counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Abel Aziz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Mir wants to stand but Aziz has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
And that's the end of the fight! Frank Mir showed his dominance in that final round. Well Mir has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
