PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Caleb Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luis Castillo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Smith might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Spiderman. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Caleb Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Luis Castillo!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, David Schapiro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith circles away from the clinch attempt.
Castillo tries to close the distance and clinch but Smith swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Smith looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Smith misses with a head kick.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smith is defended easily by Castillo.
Castillo tries to clinch up

and Smith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Castillo's guard.
Smith wants to control from the top but Castillo keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Castillo wants to stand and escape but Smith is having none of it.
Smith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Smith stands up from Castillo's guard - Smith perhaps looking for a knockout.

Castillo gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Smith to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Smith is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Castillo is working an open guard so Smith takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Castillo wants to clinch but Smith slips to the side
and Smith counters with a nice body shot.

Castillo closes the distance and clinches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The referee is keeping an eye on Castillo - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Castillo lands a knee to the head.


It looks like Caleb Smith has been cut.
Smith misses with a punch on the inside.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Smith takes a knee right on the jaw!
Castillo prevents Smith from breaking the clinch.

Castillo breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Smith moves into range and clinches up with Castillo.
Castillo throws a knee to the head but misses.
Castillo tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Castillo looks gassed!
Smith jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Castillo walks away with a smile on his face. Smith gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Castillo wants to clinch
and Smith counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Smith darts in and clinches Castillo up against the cage.
Smith has a couple of punches blocked by Castillo.
Smith wants to break free but Castillo has control.
Castillo using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Smith has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Smith drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Castillo gets the underhooks and prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Caleb Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Castillo tries to land a knee to the head but Smith blocks with his arms.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Smith jumps guard but Castillo stands there with Smith around his waist. Smith gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Castillo throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Smith blocks it with crossed arms.

Smith drops down looking for an ankle pick but Castillo pulls his leg out and moves away.
Castillo slaps away a takedown attempt from Smith, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Smith finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Castillo tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Smith is able to avoid easily.

and Smith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Castillo's guard.

Castillo wants to stand but Smith is controlling the position.

Smith decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
A solid leg kick lands there for Smith.

Smith instigates a clinch.
Castillo throws a knee to the head but misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Smith is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Smith tries to pull guard but Castillo holds him up against the cage and eventually Smith drops back down to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Castillo moves into the clinch successfully.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Smith here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Castillo fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Smith, pushing him back against the cage.

Castillo goes for a body shot but it's blocked.

and Smith counters with a shoot takedown. Castillo fights it but they end up in guard.

Smith is fighting to break Castillo's control of his arms but Castillo is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Smith gets to his feet. Castillo looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Castillo tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Smith counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Castillo's guard now.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Castillo pushes Smith off and gets back to his feet.

and Smith counters with a nice kick to the body.
Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Castillo but Castillo pushes him off and we're back to square one.

so Smith counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smith.

Smith closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith tries to advance to mount but Castillo denies him.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Castillo has momentary wrist control but Smith slips an elbow through the middle.

Castillo wants to get back to his feet but Smith is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Smith advances position into side control!
Castillo takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Smith goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Castillo rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Smith's guard! Nice work there by Castillo!
Castillo is stalling in the full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Caleb Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Smith, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
