PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kuper Kup (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and STO Ruiz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kuper Kup!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, STO Ruiz!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Sergei Dronov and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kup is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ruiz sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Ruiz moves into the clinch.
Kup has Ruiz pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Ruiz manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Kup works on Ruiz's body with a couple of short punches.

Kup breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A combination from Kup does no damage.
Kup thuds his shin into the meat of Ruiz's side.
STO Ruiz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kup swats away the attempt to clinch by Ruiz.
Kup fails with a takedown attempt.

Kup tries a head kick but it misses.
Ruiz is looking to clinch.
Kup moves in looking to clinch but Ruiz pushes him off.
Ruiz clinches but Kup breaks the clinch
and Kup counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Ruiz avoids a punch combination nicely.

Ruiz closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Ruiz stands up and beckons Kup to join him on the feet.

Kup has taken the fight to the clinch.

Kup manages to break the clinch.

Ruiz rushes Kup and presses him up against the cage.
Kup tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Ruiz just stands there and leans against the cage.
Kup has Ruiz pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Ruiz manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Kup breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ruiz takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Kup tries for a takedown but Ruiz circles away easily

and Ruiz counters with a takedown into side control.
Kup is breathing heavily.
Kup is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Ruiz asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Kup tries to buck Ruiz off but Ruiz is having none of it.
Kup is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Ruiz controlling the position from side mount.
Kup is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Kup tries to bench press Ruiz off him but Ruiz keeps the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kup is trying to control Ruiz's posture but Ruiz avoids it.
Ruiz in side control lands a decent elbow.
Kup tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Ruiz wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Ruiz controls the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
I looks like Ruiz might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Ruiz working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Kup really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Kup trying to control but Ruiz flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Ruiz is riding his opponent, not letting Kup buck him off.
Kup tries to escape but Ruiz has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Ruiz keeps control of the position easily here as Kup tries to buck him off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

STO Ruiz dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Ruiz tries to clinch

and Kup counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Kup tries to score a body lock takedown but Ruiz shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Kup with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Kup tries to pull guard but Ruiz holds him up against the cage and eventually Kup drops back down to his feet.
A frustrated look appears on Kup's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Ruiz wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Kup blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Kup tries for a takedown but Ruiz manages to get underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kuper Kup. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kup jumps guard but Ruiz stands there with Kup around his waist. Kup gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
With the fighters up against the cage, Ruiz throws an elbow but misses.

Ruiz pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Kup pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Ruiz tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kup swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Ruiz instigates a clinch.
Kup tries to pull guard but Ruiz won't allow it.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Ruiz just misses with a elbow thrown towards Kup's brow.
Kup looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Ruiz lands an elbow inside that Kup shrugs off.
Ruiz misses with a knee to the head.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.
Kup letting Ruiz take a breather here.
Ruiz tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Kup smiles and moves away.
Ruiz doesn't manage to clinch there - Kup circles away.
Ruiz lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kup circles away from the clinch attempt.

Ruiz gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Kup jumps guard but Ruiz stands there with Kup around his waist. Kup gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Ruiz stops a takedown attempt from Kup.
Ruiz misses with a knee strike.
Kup avoids a wild elbow strike from Ruiz.
Kup takes a knee right on the jaw!
Kup misses with an elbow over the top.

Ruiz ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Ruiz no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Ruiz is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Kup has his hands clasped together but Ruiz extends an breaks Kup's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Ruiz.
