Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julio Ribiero! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joao Oliveira! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Mauricio Rocha and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Oliveira slaps away a takedown attempt from Ribiero, before circling back to the center of the mat. Ribiero darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Oliveira looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Oliveira is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Ribiero pulls his head out easily. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Oliveira makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work! Ribiero shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Ribiero working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Oliveira trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Oliveira can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Ribiero controls the pace. Ribiero works over Oliveira with some ground and pound from guard. Oliveira has his foot on Ribiero's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ribiero works his way back into a safe position though.
That's one minute gone in the round. Oliveira is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Oliveira is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ribiero defends well. Ribiero drops back looking for a leg! Oliveira is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Oliveira manages to kick Ribiero off! Ribiero jumps back into Oliveira's guard. Ribiero trying to control the position from guard on top but Oliveira is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Oliveira working a defensive guard here.
Ribiero drops back, looking for a kneebar! Oliveira looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Oliveira looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Oliveira! Oliveira decides to stand up, so the ref orders Ribiero to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ribiero closes this distance looking for a takedown but Oliveira circles away. Ribiero shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Oliveira pinned against the cage. Oliveira gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Julio Ribiero. That's going to take a lot out of him. Ribiero misses with a takedown attempt - Oliveira sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ribiero scores with a takedown into Oliveira's guard. Ribiero working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Oliveira keeping full guard, as Ribiero tries to pass. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Oliveira has his foot on Ribiero's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ribiero works his way back into a safe position though. Oliveira is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Ribiero is aware though and is defending well. Ribiero thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Oliveira tries to land a sweep but no joy. Oliveira is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Ribiero rolls with it to try and escape but Oliveira cranks on the arm and Ribiero is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
