Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Darren Millar! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sergey Melikhov! The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Dmitry Maklakov and Aleksandr Martynov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! No joy there for Melikhov, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Melikhov gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Melikhov wants to stand up but Millar is controlling him. Millar lands a couple of elbows. Millar scoring with some ground and pound. Millar stops Melikhov from standing up. Millar works a leg free and moves into half guard. Millar stops Melikhov from getting back to his feet.
Millar wants to work for an arm triangle but Melikhov is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Melikhov has hold of Millar's hands but Millar slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Millar stops Melikhov from getting back to his feet.
Millar looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Millar winds up and cracks Melikhov with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Millar slips a nice elbow through Melikhov's hands, connecting with Melikhov's forehead. Millar lands strikes from half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Millar lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
That's one minute gone in the round. Millar trying to control from half guard but Melikhov is working away. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Melikhov can do anything to dispel that myth. Millar is trying to work for a kimura but Melikhov is defending well.
Melikhov on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. Melikhov tries to kick Millar off but Millar keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Millar thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Melikhov's head. Millar is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Millar looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Melikhov with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Millar winds up and cracks Melikhov with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Millar is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Millar tries to pass to full mount but Melikhov defends it. Melikhov wants to get back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Melikhov is trying to escape back to his feet but Millar uses the scramble to pass into side control.
Millar has knee on belly and moves into mount. Millar with good strikes from the mount here! Melikhov is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Melikhov looks gassed! Millar landing shots from mount. Melikhov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Millar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Melikhov wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Millar landing punches. Millar with shots to the head and body - Melikhov looks very uncomfortable down there. Millar is working for a guillotine from mount but Melikhov frees his head quite easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Melikhov is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Melikhov is bucking up trying to escape but Millar cracks him with another couple of good strikes. Millar wants to control the pace but Melikhov is squirming around nicely. Millar quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Millar but it's paid off an Melikhov is forced to tap! Nice work by Millar.
