PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alan Smithee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bryan Rake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rake has chosen Atlanta Zoo as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Alan Smithee!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bryan Rake!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rake shoots in looking for a takedown. Smithee tries to sprawl out of it but Rake keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smithee manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Rake looks for a takedown but Smithee sprawls well.
The fight stays on the outside here - Rake looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Rake fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Smithee shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smithee showed some decent athleticism there.
Rake tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Smithee manages to move to mount!

Smithee is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Rake has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Rake!

Smithee has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Rake stands up from Smithee's guard - Rake perhaps looking for a knockout.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rake throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
A head kick misses from Rake.
Rake looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Rake tries to clinch but Smithee moves out of range.

Rake drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Smithee manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Rake manages to get himself to full guard.
Smithee pushes down on Rake's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Rake looks gassed!

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Smithee is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Rake defends it well.
Rake wants to get back to full guard but Smithee has mounted him!
Smithee looking to control and managing it successfully.
Rake wants to control but Smithee is having none of it.
Smithee moves to take his opponent's back.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rake is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Smithee controlling the positon.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Rake is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Alan Smithee is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rake throws a head kick but Smithee moves out of range.

Smithee gets a takedown into half guard.
Smithee is controlling the pace.
Rake trying to control from the bottom.

Smithee is pressing down on Rake's thigh, looking to free his foot. Rake is holding on for now.
Rake is not content to let Smithee control the position.

Smithee is looking for a kimura here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Rake wants to control but Smithee is keeping busy.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Smithee wants to pass the guard but Rake is defending well.
Rake trying to hold on to Smithee's head to control him but Smithee postures up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Smithee is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Smithee tries to free his leg and advance position but Rake is retaining full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Rake looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Smithee works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Rake pushes Smithee off looking to stand but Smithee dives back in and keeps control.

Smithee is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Rake doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Smithee.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smithee is taking a breather. Rake says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Rake wants to clinch but Smithee slips to the side

and Smithee counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Smithee won't allow Rake to sweep him here.
Smithee slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Smithee wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rake keeps working.
Rake trying his best to control but Smithee has mounted him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smithee trying to control but Rake is having none of it.
Rake tries to hold on but Smithee pushes him away.

Rake is wriggling around trying to escape.
Rake is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Smithee has taken his back.
Rake is really stuck here.
Smithee controlling the position well here. Rake rolled but Smithee kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.
Smithee seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Rake for as long as he can get away with.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smithee is looking to control Rake but Rake is wriggling around and keeping busy.

Rake is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Rake tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rake wants to control but Smithee is having none of it.
Rake slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Rake wants to improve his position but Smithee is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rake is trying to stand back up but Smithee is controlling him
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smithee passes into side control, despite Rake's attempt to control the position.
Bryan Rake has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Alan Smithee is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
