Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Shanks McGee! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Alfred Diaz! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Shirou Masuda and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Diaz lands an overhand right. McGee shoots for a takedown but Diaz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Diaz waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract McGee. Alfred Diaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Diaz throws a low kick but McGee avoids it. Diaz fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Diaz looks to throw the jab but McGee is out of range. The fight stays on the outside here - McGee looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Diaz takes a swing at McGee's ribcage but misses. Diaz tries to close the distance and clinch but McGee swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. McGee shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Diaz sprawls well. Diaz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. McGee gets slowly back to his feet. A swing and a miss from Diaz. Nice shot lands for Diaz. McGee clinches. McGee tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Diaz smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shanks McGee. That's going to take a lot out of him. Diaz gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Diaz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Diaz is adopting a defensive guard. Diaz wants to sweep here but McGee controlling him for the moment. McGee trying to control but Diaz is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. McGee's corner is telling him to maintain position. McGee stops Diaz from standing up. Diaz wants to hit a switch here but McGee passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Diaz there! McGee tries to control but Diaz wriggling away. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Diaz can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Diaz wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by McGee.
McGee jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Diaz manages to avoid the submission attempt.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Diaz throws a lazy right hand but McGee sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. McGee will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. McGee shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. McGee tries to free his leg and advance position but Diaz is retaining full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. McGee wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving. Diaz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McGee. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Diaz tries to land a sweep but no joy. McGee is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. McGee trying to control but Diaz is working from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Shanks McGee will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
McGee moves out of range as Diaz strikes. Diaz swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by McGee. The fight stays on the outside here - McGee looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Diaz looks to score with a jab to the body but McGee is just out of range. Danga de danga de dang - Diaz scores with a four punch combination! McGee moves into range and clinches up with Diaz. McGee jumps guard but Diaz stands there with McGee around his waist. McGee gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
McGee is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage. Diaz working hard to break the clinch. Diaz looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Diaz escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Diaz throws and low kick but McGee moves out of range easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. McGee clinches but Diaz breaks the clinch and Diaz counters with a one-two to the body. McGee fails with the takedown and Diaz counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Nice uppercut lands for Diaz. That snapped McGee's head back.
Diaz scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Diaz tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Diaz tests McGee's chin there with a solid looking shot. McGee shoots in for a takedown but Diaz shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shanks McGee. That's going to take a lot out of him. Diaz tries to clinch but McGee moves away and McGee counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. McGee controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Diaz wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and McGee manages to pass to side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Diaz is looking to improve his position.
McGee sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Diaz defending well though. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
McGee's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. McGee is looking for a kimura here.
McGee is looking to advance position but Diaz won't allow it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. McGee is trying to control the action in half guard but Diaz is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. McGee scoring with strikes to the body and head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McGee missing with the ground and pound from half guard. McGee wants to control but Diaz is keeping him busy. McGee passes to side control. McGee is looking to take a break and control but Diaz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Shanks McGee will probably get the nod. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Diaz swinging wilding here.
A combination from Diaz does no damage. McGee circles away from the clinch attempt and McGee counters with a single leg into guard. Diaz didn't expect that. McGee stands and steps away. Diaz gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Diaz tries to land a front kick but McGee steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. McGee tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him. McGee gets caught flat footed, as Diaz shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. McGee is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. McGee is really struggling to control Diaz but he's trying to hold on to the position. McGee is pulling down on Diaz's head to control his posture.
The referee stands the fighters back up. Shanks McGee just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. McGee gets in close and instigates a clinch. McGee breaks from the clinch.
A left and a right from Diaz both land. Nice combination.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A telegraphed right hand from Diaz misses the target. Diaz swings away with a leg kick that misses. Diaz scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. McGee gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Diaz takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. McGee is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Diaz pulls his head out easily. McGee controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. McGee is not content to let Diaz control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McGee keeping hold of Diaz's head, controlling as best he can. McGee is pressing down on Diaz's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. McGee is pulling down on Diaz's head. It's preventing any offense from Diaz, at least for the moment. McGee wants to sweep but no luck.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. McGee not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Diaz not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Alfred Diaz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! McGee tries to land a sweep but no joy. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as McGee holds on and takes a little breather.
And that's the end of the fight! Shanks McGee showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for McGee, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
