The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A swing and a miss from Matusow. Matusow misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Hammerston.
Hammerston shoots in looking for a takedown. Matusow tries to sprawl out of it but Hammerston keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Matusow manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Hammerston takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him. Matusow gets a takedown into half guard. Matusow is looking to take a break and control but Hammerston is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Hammerston is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Matusow wants to control but Hammerston is keeping him busy.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Hammerston bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. A lazy left from Matusow finds it's target. Matusow tries to close the distance and clinch but Hammerston swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Matusow throws a shot from downtown. Hammerston moves away and avoids it. Matusow lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Hammerston backs up against the cage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Matusow throws a big shot that misses. Hammerston ducks under a wild hook from Matusow. Matusow misses with a wild combination.
Matusow shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Hammerston counters with a nice double leg into guard. Hammerston is looking to advance position but Matusow has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Matusow looking to control but Hammerston is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Hammerston is trying to escape the mount.

Hammerston is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Hammerston manages to regain half guard. Good work. Hammerston blocking the ground and pound attempt from Matusow.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Hammerston wants to improve his position but Matusow is controlling well.
Matusow is trying to control the action in half guard but Hammerston is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hammerston wants to get back to full guard. It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Hammerston takes one to the chin there. Matusow connects with a body shot. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Mike Matusow will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Hammerston scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Hammerston not landing any meaningful shots this time. Hammerston thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Matusow's head. Matusow wants to control but Hammerston is keeping busy.
Matusow tries to roll over but Hammerston keeps him under control. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Hammerston connects with a nice short shot to Matusow's temple. Hammerston is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Matusow is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
