PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jani Janis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonny Gankon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jani Janis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jonny Gankon!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Anni Minnemäki and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Janis looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Janis loads up on a big right hand but Gankon slips the punch.

Janis moves into the clinch.

Janis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Gankon throws a quick inside leg kick.
Gankon scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Janis doesn't seem bothered though.

Janis feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gankon is pulling down on Janis's head to control his posture.
Janis throws a big right hand that misses.

Gankon escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Janis gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Gankon is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Janis defends well.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Janis accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Janis lands a couple of elbows.
Janis tries to free his leg and advance position but Gankon is retaining full guard.
Janis is stalling in the full guard.
Gankon trying to keep a closed guard but Janis is proving a slippery customer.
Janis connects with a couple of short punches.
Janis missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Gankon is trying to control the position from the bottom.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Gankon is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Gankon is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gankon is trying to keep Janis in close.
Janis wants to stand but Gankon has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Janis makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Janis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Gankon is controlling Janis's posture.

Janis stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Janis throws a shot from downtown. Gankon moves away and avoids it.
Gankon swats away the attempt to clinch by Janis.
Gankon looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Janis is fending him off so far but Gankon persists. Nope, Janis circles away and we're back to standing.

Janis has Gankon up against the cage in a clinch.

Janis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Janis shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Janis showed some decent athleticism there.
Gankon is refusing to be controlled, as Janis sits in half guard.
Janis lands strikes from half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Janis connects with a nice short shot to Gankon's temple.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gankon is pressing down on Janis's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Janis got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gankon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Janis has managed to get both his arms back between Gankon's legs - danger averted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Gankon avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Gankon fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jani Janis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Gankon looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Janis is trying to stand back up but Gankon is controlling him
Gankon throwing shots but Janis is blocking nicely.
Janis wants to get back to full guard but Gankon has mounted him!

Janis is squirming around, avoiding Gankon's attempts to control the action.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gankon can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Janis is looking to escape.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Janis is looking to improve his position but Gankon isn't that keen on the idea.
Gankon sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Gankon tries to control but Janis wriggling away.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Gankon cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Gankon goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Janis turns into him and now he's in Gankon's guard.

Janis working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Gankon's head.
Gankon keeping moving, preventing Janis from controlling successfully.

Janis is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Gankon looking for a sweep. Not yet Gankon, not yet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Janis gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Janis decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Gankon wants to control but Janis is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jani Janis will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Janis throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
A left and a right from Janis both land. Nice combination.
Gankon scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Janis keeps the fight on the outside.
Janis throws a shot from downtown. Gankon moves away and avoids it.
Gankon shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Janis pinned against the cage. Janis gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Jani Janis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gankon doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Janis counters with a takedown into side control.
Janis in side control, throwing shots but Gankon defends.
Janis landing strikes.
Janis working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Janis throws an elbow but Gankon slips to the side and avoids it well.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Janis decides to stand back up. Janis steps back and let's Gankon get back to his feet.

and Janis counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Jani Janis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonny Gankon.

Gankon is looking for a triangle but Janis pushes his legs off easily.
Janis is looking to stand up but Gankon won't let him.
Jani Janis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Janis decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gankon stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gankon wants it to stay on the feet.
No luck for Janis with that takedown attempt.
A head kick from Gankon lands but Janis takes it in his stride.
Janis moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Gankon defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Janis.
Janis shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gankon defends it nicely.

Gankon fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Janis sprawls well initially but Gankon persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Janis tries to kick Gankon off but Gankon keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Jani Janis is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Gankon seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Janis does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Gankon takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Janis wants to get back to his feet.
Janis regains full guard. Nicely done.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Janis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Gankonis looking to pass into half guard but Janis pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Janis is in guard.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Janis, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
