The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Winchester looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mareklidis is fending him off so far but Winchester persists. Nope, Mareklidis circles away and we're back to standing. Winchester tries for a takedown but Mareklidis sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Winchester tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Mareklidis swivels and escapes. Steven Mareklidis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Buck Winchester. Winchester avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Winchester fails with the takedown. Horrible takedown by Winchester or perhaps it was just good defense by Mareklidis which made him look bad. Mareklidis has taken the fight to the clinch.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Winchester cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Steven Mareklidis dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Winchester will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Mareklidis drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Winchester wants to stand up but Mareklidis is controlling him. Winchester utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Mareklidis postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Mareklidis is working Winchester over from the guard. That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Winchester is trying to stick to Mareklidis's back but Mareklidis is turning into Winchester. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Winchester's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Mareklidis. Mareklidis is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Mareklidis drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mareklidis jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
