PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Henrique Alzaibar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Phoenix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Phoenix is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: The Toughest Song In The Universe. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Matheus Silva and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Phoenix dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Phoenix swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Phoenix throws a series of punches but Alzaibar moves out of range.
Phoenix scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.

Phoenix shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Alzaibar looks like he's trying to stand up.
Phoenix is figuring out what he wants to do next.
I looks like Phoenix might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Phoenix is trying to control. Alzaibar wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Well, if Phoenix is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Alzaibar is trying to stand up here but Phoenix is controlling him well.
Phoenix tries to pass to full mount but Alzaibar defends it.
Alzaibar tries to kick Phoenix off but Phoenix keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Phoenix tries to pass to full mount but Alzaibar defends it.
Phoenix is taking a breather. Alzaibar says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Alzaibar is trying to stand.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Phoenix darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Alzaibar wants to get back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Alzaibar misses with a two punch combination.
Alzaibar drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Phoenix connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Alzaibar really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Phoenix looks to land a combination but Alzaibar avoids it well.

and Phoenix counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Alzaibar thinking.
Phoenix lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Phoenix displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Alzaibar.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Phoenix fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Alzaibar sprawls well initially but Phoenix persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Phoenix wants to pass to mount but Alzaibar is defending the position.
Phoenix is keen to just control but Alzaibar is a slippery customer.

Phoenix is looking to advance position but Alzaibar won't allow it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Phoenix closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Alzaibar to the mat! Alzaibar manages to get full guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Paul Phoenix showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Despite being in the dominant position, Paul Phoenix just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Well Phoenix has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
