Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dave Thomas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Julian Reis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dave Thomas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julian Reis!
The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Alexandre Firmino and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thomas throws a series of punches but Reis moves out of range.
Thomas throws a leg kick which misses Reis's front leg but catches the back leg as Reis tries to avoid it.

Thomas shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Reis manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Reis being controlled here, momentarily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reis wants to sweep but no luck.

Thomas decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Reis, up you get!
Thomas throws a sloppy head kick and Reis moves out of range easily.

Thomas gets a takedown into half guard.

Thomas thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Reis works his way to full guard. Good work.
Reis is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Reis fails with the takedown

and Thomas counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Reis on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Reis tries to roll over but Thomas keeps him under control.

Thomas's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Reis is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Reis is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Thomas jumps into side control!

Thomas decides to stand up, so the ref orders Reis to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Thomas escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

and Thomas counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Reis!
Dave Thomas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Julian Reis.
Reis bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Reis postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Thomas is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Reis, into his guard.
Thomas stays in close to Reis's body and controls the position.

Thomas stands up and waves to Reis to follow him.

Reis fails with the takedown

and Thomas decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Reis's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Reis manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Thomas defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Reis.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Reis doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Thomas counters with a shoot takedown. Reis fights it but they end up in guard.
Reis keeping moving, preventing Thomas from controlling successfully.
Thomas stands and throws Reis's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Thomas is looking to take a break and control but Reis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Dave Thomas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Reis manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Reis is trying to work for a kimura but Thomas is defending well.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Reis is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Thomas has managed to free his arm - good work.

Thomas manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Reis throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Thomas's waist but Thomas gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Reis off to one side.

Thomas remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Thomas lands a few punches from side control.
Reis tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Thomas wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Thomas cracks Reis with an elbow. That is naaassty.
Reis is being controlled here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Reis shoots and misses

and Thomas counters by clinching up.
Reis fails to pull guard.

Thomas turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Thomas manages to end up in side control.
Reis tries to bench press Thomas off him but Thomas keeps the position.

Thomas decides to stand back up. Thomas steps back and let's Reis get back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Reis has hold of Thomas's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Thomas manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Reis has control of Thomas's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Thomas regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Thomas is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Reis can do to turn this around?

Reis jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Thomas is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Thomas and Reis has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Reis with a lazy takedown attempt

and Thomas counters with a single leg into guard. Reis didn't expect that.
Reis looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Thomas seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Reis manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Thomas manages to get himself to full guard.

Reis drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Reis jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Thomas jumps guard and drags Reis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Reis makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Reis.
Thomas's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Reis is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Reis is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Thomas sees it coming and defends easily.

Dave Thomas is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Reis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Julian Reis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Reis drops back, looking for a kneebar! Thomas looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Thomas looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Thomas!

Well Thomas has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
