PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Georg the Caliph (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rai Costa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Georg the Caliph!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rai Costa!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Cecil Peabody and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
the Caliph scores with a shot to the body.
Georg the Caliph seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fight stays on the outside here - Costa looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Costa gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Costa wants to sweep but no luck.
the Caliph advances position into side control!

the Caliph working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

the Caliph is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Costa knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
the Caliph misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

the Caliph scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Costa to see if he's OK.
Costa really doesn't want to stay on the ground with the Caliph. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
the Caliph passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Costa!

the Caliph is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Costa has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Costa!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

the Caliph has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Costa can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
the Caliph bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Costa's guard.

the Caliph is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

the Caliph postures up in Costa's guard and throws a big left but Costa blocks it.

the Caliph postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Costa is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of the Caliph, into his guard.
the Caliph is breathing heavily.
the Caliph wants to sweep here but Costa controlling him for the moment.
Costa is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Costa can do anything to dispel that myth.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
the Caliph throws a strike aimed at the side of Costa's head but Costa avoids it well.

What's Costa going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.

the Caliph is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Costa is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

the Caliph goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Costa rolls with the submission and now he's on top in the Caliph's guard! Nice work there by Costa!
Costa wants to stand but the Caliph has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

the Caliph wants to finish this one by submission but Costa is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from the Caliph.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



the Caliph feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Georg the Caliph overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, the Caliph cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

the Caliph is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Costa has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Costa sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
the Caliph has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

the Caliph working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

the Caliph looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

the Caliph wants to pass to mount but Costa is defending the position.
Rai Costa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

the Caliph is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Costa is just riding it out for now. the Caliph eventually gives up the hold.

Well the Caliph has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
