PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Rogerio Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alex King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Alex King was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rogerio Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alex King!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Columbo Gatti and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alves tries to clinch up but King circles away and keeps his distance.
Alves fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
King keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

King changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Alves looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
King has knee on belly and moves into mount.
King in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
King scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Alves?

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alves tries to reverse the position but King maintains control.
King is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Alves can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

King working for a submission but Alves is keeping him at bay.

King with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

King wants to finish this one by submission but Alves is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from King.
King looks gassed!
King has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Alves's face.

Alves is in all sorts of trouble here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
King lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Alves is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
King controlling from the full mount.
Alves is looking to improve his position but King isn't that keen on the idea.
King is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Alves manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Alves is looking to improve his position.
King looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Alves with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
King is looking to take a break and control but Alves is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
King frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
King has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Alves is squirming around, avoiding King's attempts to control the action.

Alves bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

King bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Alves's guard.
Alves wants to improve his position but instead King has moved into half guard.

Alves tries to get to full guard but King has control of the leg.
King works his way into side control.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

King tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex King dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Alves bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps King's head backwards.
Alves scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Alves defends well against a solid takedown attempt from King.
King is looking to slow Alves down with leg kicks.
Alves leaves King with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
King avoids the body shot from Alves.
King shoots in but no luck this time.
Rogerio Alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex King.
King looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Alves digs a good hook to King's body.
Alves wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
King will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
King tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Alves swivels and escapes.

Alves connects with a jab.
King misses with an uppercut. Alves saw that one coming.
King wants to clinch but Alves slips to the side
and Alves counters with a straight right hand.
Alves displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.
Alves lands an overhand right.

King closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
King throws a strike aimed at the side of Alves's head but Alves avoids it well.
Alves tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but King wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Alves is working hard here to advance position.
You can see the frustration on Alves's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Alves tries to buck King off but King is having none of it.

Alves on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
King cracks Alves with a big right hand but Alves just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

King shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
King makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
King prevents Alves from getting back to his feet.
Alves wants to sweep but no luck.
King is pushing down on Alves's leg trying to pass to half guard. Alves is fighting to maintain full guard but King has managed to sneak the leg through.
King wants to free his trapped foot but Alves is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Alves works his way to full guard. Good work.

Alves tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Alves working for a triangle but King defends it easily.

King thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Alves throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
King ducks under a wild hook from Alves.

King has closed the distance and engaged Alves in a clinch.

King manages to pull guard.
Alves postures up in King's guard and throws a big left but King blocks it.
King tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Alves trying to control but King is working from the bottom.
Alves throws a big right hand that misses.
King is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Alves slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

King looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Alex King will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Alves is looking to clinch but King is avoiding it.

King shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. King showed some decent athleticism there.
Alves is looking to improve his position.
Alex King has got the better of the ground game so far.
Alves is trying to stand up here but King is controlling him well.
King lands with a punch from half guard.
King works his way into full mount!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
King looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

King with shots to the head and body - Alves looks very uncomfortable down there.
Alves working to try and regain half guard.

King has hold of Alves's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Alves manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Alves is wriggling around trying to escape.

King is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Alves can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Alves tries to reverse the position but King maintains control.
King pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

King thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

King is going olschool here, as he tries to force Alves to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Alves shrugs it off.
King lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Alves hang on?
Alves is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Alves sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

King wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alves keeps working.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells King's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Alves manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. King manages to get himself to full guard.

King looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Alves is defending well. King quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Alves has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! King celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
