PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Seth Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Heartman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Heartman comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Heartman Theme song kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! John Heartman has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Seth Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Heartman!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Heartman.
Heartman fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Heartman takes a jab right on the kisser.
Hughes throws a right and a left that Heartman avoids nicely.
Hughes throws a solid leg kick but Heartman takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Hughes.
Hughes throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Heartman tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Hughes swivels and escapes.
Seth Hughes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Heartman.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Heartman shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hughes as he jumps to the side.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hughes wants to sweep here but Heartman controlling him for the moment.
Heartman stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hughes swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Horrible takedown by Heartman or perhaps it was just good defense by Hughes which made him look bad.

Hughes scores with a punch to the head.

Hughes throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Hughes throws out a loose jab but Heartman uses good head movement to avoid it.
Hughes throws a big shot that misses.
Hughes misses with a hook. Heartman ducked under it nicely.
Hughes takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
A looping hook to the body misses from Hughes. Heartman does a little dance to reset his feet.
Hughes swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Hughes takes a swing at Heartman's ribcage but misses.
Hughes rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Heartman moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Heartman checks a leg kick.
Seth Hughes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hughes swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Nice defenses there by Heartman.
Hughes throws a series of punches but Heartman moves out of range.
Hughes looks to throw the jab but Heartman is out of range.

Heartman wants to pass the guard but Hughes is keeping the position.

A looping hook to the body misses from Hughes. Heartman does a little dance to reset his feet.
Hughes tries to land a front kick but Heartman steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Heartman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hughes tries to avoid it but Heartman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hughes to the ground. Hughes escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Heartman shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hughes as he avoids it easily.

and Heartman counters with a nice double leg into side control. Hughes won't be happy with that.

Heartman is looking to take a break and control but Hughes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Heartman thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Heartman working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Hughes is looking for a sweep.

Heartman working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Hughes is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Heartman's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Hughes tries to roll over but Heartman keeps him under control.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

and Heartman counters with a shoot takedown. Hughes fights it but they end up in guard.

Hughes is staying active underneath Heartman, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

John Heartman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Heartman walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

No joy there for Hughes, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Hughes avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Heartman shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Heartman fails with a takedown attempt.
Seth Hughes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Heartman.
Hughes goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

John Heartman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

and Heartman counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Hughes's guard now.
Heartman wants to control from the top but Hughes keeps moving.
Hughes is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

I would just about give that final round to John Heartman.
