PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Link Copper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brutas Beefcake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Beefcake's choice of entrance music: The BeefCake. Brutas Beefcake told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Link Copper! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brutas Beefcake! The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Elvis Blanc and Robert Douchet.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Copper gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Copper is pressed up against the cage. Beefcake has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Copper down to the mat. Copper avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. Beefcake shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Copper pinned against the cage. Copper gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Copper shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Beefcake looks gassed! Copper drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Copper jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Beefcake has momentary wrist control but Copper slips an elbow through the middle. Copper thows a big elbow that misses. Copper postures up.
Copper is looking to work some ground and pound but Beefcake has wrist control. Copper lands a couple of elbows. Copper trying to control the position from guard on top but Beefcake is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Copper with a nice head shot there. Copper chips away with some ground and pound. Beefcake trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Beefcake utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Copper throwing strikes from guard but Beefcake blocks nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Beefcake has his foot on Copper's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Copper works his way back into a safe position though. Copper is stalling in the full guard. Copper landing with the ground and pound. Copper with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Copper's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Copper postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Copper stands up over Beefcake, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Copper wants to pass the guard but Beefcake is keeping the position. Copper with a nice head shot there. Copper postures up and lands a big shot to Beefcake's brow. Copper trying to control but Beefcake is working from the bottom. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Copper postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Copper with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Copper trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Copper postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Copper has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Copper makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Copper with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Copper works over Beefcake with some ground and pound from guard. Copper lands a couple of elbows. Copper with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Copper lands a couple of digs. Beefcake working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Copper doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Copper manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Copper trying to control the position from guard on top but Beefcake is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Beefcake not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Beefcake looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Copper distracts Beefcake with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Copper works over Beefcake with some ground and pound from guard. Copper is in close to Beefcake's body, working some short punches and elbows. Copper landing with the ground and pound. Beefcake looking for a sweep. Not yet Beefcake, not yet.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Copper is looking to clinch. Beefcake misses with a takedown attempt and Copper counters with a straight right hand. Link Copper has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brutas Beefcake. A decent looking body kick lands there for Copper. Beefcake gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Copper to score an easy takedown into full guard. Copper will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Copper with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Copper is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Copper connects with a couple of short punches. Beefcake had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Copper defends it easily. Copper trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Beefcake wants to sweep but no luck. Copper knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Beefcake on the ground. Copper postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Copper postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Beefcake takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. Copper shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Beefcake is trying to maintain the position but Copper is very close to passing his half guard. Copper is nestled in close to Beefcake, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Link Copper dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Copper feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Copper is working Beefcake over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Copper with a nice head shot there. Copper lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Copper lands a couple of digs. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Beefcake is on top in guard.
Copper looking to hit a scissor sweep but Beefcake is one step ahead there. Copper is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Copper throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Beefcake wants to control from the top but Copper keeps moving. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Copper looking for a sweep. Not yet Copper, not yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Copper trying to keep a closed guard but Beefcake is proving a slippery customer.
Beefcake wants to pass the guard but Copper is keeping the position. Copper looking to hit a scissor sweep but Beefcake is one step ahead there.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Copper has Beefcake up against the cage in a clinch.
Beefcake prevents a takedown attempt there.
Beefcake has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Copper is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Beefcake drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Copper gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Copper has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Beefcake is trying to keep an underhook but Copper manages to get the takedown into half guard. Beefcake is defending against the submission attempts here by Copper.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Beefcake is looking to control Copper's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Beefcake avoid being mounted? Beefcake regains full guard. Nicely done. Copper is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Beefcake wants to stand and escape but Copper is having none of it. Copper stands up over Beefcake, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Copper scoring with punches to the head and body. Beefcake wants to sweep but no luck. Copper controlling the position. Copper working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Beefcake. Beefcake postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Copper is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Beefcake is controlling him. Beefcake looking to pass the guard. Beefcake is fighting to break Copper's control of his arms but Copper is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Copper wants to stand up but Beefcake is controlling him. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Beefcake's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. The fight moves into the clinch position. Copper breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Copper scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Link Copper overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Beefcake gets back to full guard.
Copper wants to control from the top but Beefcake keeps moving. Beefcake wants to sweep but no luck. Copper works over Beefcake with some ground and pound from guard. Beefcake throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Copper postures up in Beefcake's guard and throws a big left but Beefcake blocks it. Beefcake avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Beefcake manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Copper manages to get himself to full guard.
Copper keeping moving, preventing Beefcake from controlling successfully. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Link Copper dominated that second round. That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!
Copper clinches with his opponent.
Beefcake has Copper pressed against the cage, preventing Copper from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Copper escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Copper wants to clinch. Copper is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Beefcake's half guard. Copper slips a nice elbow through Beefcake's hands, connecting with Beefcake's forehead. Copper prevents Beefcake from improving his position. Copper lands strikes from half guard. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Beefcake is looking to escape. Copper is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Beefcake tries to roll over but Copper keeps him under control.

Copper lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Copper shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Beefcake's guard. Copper stopping the sweep attempt from Beefcake. Beefcake keeping moving, preventing Copper from controlling successfully. Beefcake wants to sweep but no luck. Copper scoring with punches to the head and body. Beefcake looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Brutas Beefcake is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Copper feints and as Beefcake raises his hands in defense, Copper changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Beefcake wants to sweep but no luck. Beefcake looking for a triangle here. Copper is fighting it but it looks tight! Beefcake pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Copper is tapping out - this one is all over!
