Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Zi Phan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Johnny Volkman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Volkman is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Jesus Chorou. Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Johnny Volkman enters the cage!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Alexandre Firmino and Thiago Cunha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Phan stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Phan wants it to stay on the feet.
Phan shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Volkman defends it nicely.
Phan throws a hook to the side of Volkman's head but Volkman sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Volkman swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

and Phan counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Phan.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Volkman looking to hit a scissor sweep but Phan is one step ahead there.
Volkman will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Volkman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Phan with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Phan has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Phan shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Volkman sprawls well. Volkman wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Phan gets slowly back to his feet.

Zi Phan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Johnny Volkman.
Phan looks to land a left hand but Volkman moved out of range nicely.
Volkman fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Phan, pushing him back against the cage.
Volkman misses with a knee strike.

Phan can't get the takedown.
Volkman breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
The crowd cheers as Volkman lands an impressive looking overhand right. Phan doesn't seem phased though.
A slow jab from Phan misses its intended target.
Phan leaves Volkman with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Phan throws a body punch but Volkman moves out of range.

and Phan counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Phan seems to be looking for submissions.

Phan is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Volkman has managed to free his arm - good work.
Phan is pressing down on Volkman's thigh, looking to free his foot. Volkman is holding on for now.

Volkman is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Phan passes to side control.
Phan is trying to get an arm triangle but Volkman is defending well.

Phan is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Volkman has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Zi Phan dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Volkman lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Phan backs up against the cage.
Volkman shoots for a double leg takedown but Phan sprawls well. He's pushed Volkman's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Volkman closes the distance looking to clinch
and Phan counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Volkman!
Phan lands a big shot there that rocks Volkman but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
It looks like Johnny Volkman has been cut.
Phan fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Phan jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Volkman manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Phan cracks Volkman with a big elbow.
An elbow from Phan crashes against the mat.
Volkman tries to buck Phan off but Phan is having none of it.
Phan landing strikes.
Volkman is rocked!
Volkman is breathing heavily.

Phan is working Volkman over with some ground and pound from side control.
Volkman is still in real trouble! Can Phan finish him?
Phan remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

A big shot lands for Phan! That's hurt Volkman! Will he recover? Phan fires away with more strikes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight!
