Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matheus Kosta! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jake Appleby! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Emerson Jorge and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kosta blocks a low kick nicely. Matheus Kosta seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kosta looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Kosta is looking to clinch but Appleby is avoiding it.
A head kick misses from Appleby. Kosta pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Appleby connects with a jab. Appleby shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kosta's guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Appleby is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Appleby's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Kosta knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Appleby on the ground. Appleby cracks Kosta with a solid left hand. Appleby has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Appleby is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Appleby stands and steps away. Kosta gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Appleby tries to clinch up but Kosta circles away and keeps his distance. Appleby wants to clinch. Appleby tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Appleby looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Appleby content to control rather than advance. Appleby has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Kosta defend it? Appleby steps over the head and cranks it - Kosta is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Appleby!
