Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Peter Piper! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Baby J Penn! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penn bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Piper misses with an uppercut. Penn loads up on a big right hand but Piper slips the punch. Piper looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Penn! Piper is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Penn can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Penn is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Piper unloads with some shots from mount but Penn bucks and avoids them well.
Piper takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Piper seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Penn for as long as he can get away with. Piper trying to control but Penn is having none of it. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Piper goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Penn is on top in guard.
Piper has control of Penn's left arm, preventing Penn from doing any damage. Piper keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Piper is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Piper is adopting a defensive guard. Piper had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Penn defends it easily. Piper is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Penn wants to pass the guard but Piper is keeping the position. Penn got a little sloppy there for a moment and Piper has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Penn has managed to get both his arms back between Piper's legs - danger averted.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Piper had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Penn defends it easily. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Piper wants to sweep here but Penn controlling him for the moment. Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Piper is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Penn defends well. Penn passes easily into side control. Nice work. Piper is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Piper knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Piper tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Penn wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Penn working away. Piper is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Penn off and has taken his back! Penn is having to fend off submission attempts from Piper, who is looking to sink in the choke. Piper doesn't have the hooks in though and Penn manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Piper is breathing heavily. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Piper wants to sweep here but Penn controlling him for the moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Peter Piper dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Piper steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Penn. Piper swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Penn fails with the takedown and Piper decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Penn's guard. Piper trying to control the position from guard on top but Penn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Penn keeping full guard, as Piper tries to pass. Piper has gone for a leg lock! Penn slips out almost immediately though and dives into Piper's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Piper manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Penn is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Piper misses with some ground and pound and Penn recovers position to half guard. Piper keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Piper is looking for a kimura but Penn is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Piper to get the leverage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Piper wants to work for an arm triangle but Penn is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Piper wants to lay and pray for a moment but Penn keeps working. Piper is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Piper stops Penn from getting back to his feet.
Piper is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Piper throwing shots but Penn is blocking nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn wants to control but Piper is keeping busy.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Penn misses the shot to the body. Penn has his takedown stuffed and Piper counters with a nice double leg into guard. Piper sitting in guard here, content to control. Piper has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Piper forces his way into half guard. Piper missing with the ground and pound from half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Piper thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Penn's head. Piper works his way into full mount! Piper has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Penn is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Peter Piper!
