The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hayate decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Van Halen trying to control but Hayate postures up.
Hayate trying to control the action but Van Halen is working from the bottom. Ground and pound from Hayate. Hayate looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Hayate has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Van Halen is concentrating on defense, preventing Hayate from advancing position. Van Halen misses with some strikes from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Hayate is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Van Halen is aware though and is defending well. Hayate keeping full guard, as Van Halen tries to pass. Van Halen makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Van Halen postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Hayate is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Van Halen, into his guard. Hayate missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Van Halen ducks under a wild hook from Hayate. Van Halen scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Hayate is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Van Halen pulls his head out easily. Hayate wants to control but Van Halen is keeping busy.
Van Halen looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Let's hope that Van Halen has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Hayate is looking to improve his position.

That's one minute gone in the round. Van Halen prevents Hayate from improving his position. Hayate is looking to control Van Halen's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hayate avoid being mounted? Tatsuyo Hayate overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Hayate smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. The fighters circling - Hayate throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Van Halen throws a nice looking combination but Hayate bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Van Halen with a body punch. A glancing blow. Hayate drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hayate wants to control but Van Halen is keeping him busy. Van Halen is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Hayate lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Van Halen struggling a bit here. Van Halen is pushing Hayate's head away, looking to escape. Hayate manages to hold on to the position though. Van Halen is looking to reverse the position. Van Halen can't do much from the bottom here. Van Halen on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hayate working the head with strikes. Van Halen is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Hayate off and has taken his back! Van Halen punches the canvas rather than the man. Van Halen is controlling the position but Hayate somehow manages to roll and ends up with half guard.
Hayate keeps control of the position for the meantime. Hayate is not content to let Van Halen control the position. Van Halen might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hayate kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Hayate trying to hold on to Van Halen's head to control him but Van Halen postures up.

That was a close second round but I would say that Tatsuyo Hayate will probably get the nod. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Van Halen postures up.

Hayate escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Van Halen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Van Halen preventing the sweep. Hayate swivels though and keeps the full guard. Van Halen postures up in Hayate's guard and throws a big left but Hayate blocks it. Van Halen trying to control the position from guard on top but Hayate is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hayate controls Van Halen momentarily but Van Halen frees himself. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Jon Van Halen has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Hayate is stalling in the full guard. Van Halen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hayate defends well. Van Halen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Hayate gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Van Halen takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Hayate trying to control the position from guard on top but Van Halen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
And that's the end of the fight! Tatsuyo Hayate showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hayate, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
